I think the next experiment I will use a different tray and hopefully they will turn better.

Hiya, whites!

My one and only Sweeter Heater is in use with the 4-week old chicks. Besides, it's only 11"x16", which would be enough space for maybe 6 of the 8-weeks olds to get under...
I had a heat lamp in with the (3) month olds I put outside; hung up in the peak of the roof so there was no chance of igniting anything. That was in October. Unfortunately, I unplugged the lamb too soon & lost them. They were doing fine 'til then.

seriously sorry these guys didnt work out better, I pray you try them upright next hatch and see what happens. I want to try them like I did silkies but have to find some over here first

Overall would they make a good dual purpose. Do they grow as fast as they say? Eggs at five months for a good sized bird seems great.

Oh yes - usually people (including me) actually initially get and keep them for meat (because they taste so good and generally good sized). Size is always going to vary depending on source like any breed - some of mine were smaller than I'd like - they were culled, big ones kept to breed. Eggs are the bonus, but they lay well. I live somewhere very hot, so that's the added appeal for me.

Come visit us over on the Naked Neck thread. We're a nice group (and we even have a color genetics geek on tap over there!), and we cross post a lot on the Breeding for Production thread. Chickengr has a NN hen who is 11 pounds!
