Do I need to worry about her not being able to kick herself free because she's in the corner of this basket like this? (She's been at it only about 10 minutes or so. She's pretty grumpy about it, chirping and pushing and huffing and puffing...)

Resist the erg to open it when hatching. If they are strong enough and will be vigorous and healthy birds they will get out by themselves.

JK... I know what you mean. I happen to be one of those that is willing to wait to get what I want. If it's something I really, really want, the wait is well worth it.

Right. After been married twice, never again, i also found that when you have the money just get it. You may say I'll wait till next month maybe It will be better. Well its never better. Then you may never get it. Should have just gotten it then.

Two others (not in the photo) are starting to zip, I think (enlarging the pip) - I think they hear him! They are synchronizing pretty well - we'll see how the ones that are pipping at the wrong spot do (they're all from one pullet with rounder eggs).

Hi lozerface, I see you live in Alaska. I've found with living where it is cold & snowy myself that feeding a higher protein level feed in the winter months has helped decrease the feather picking. Feathers are made of protein, birds need protein to keep warm, to grow feathers & to lay eggs. If their diet is not providing enough protein to sustain all those things they can start pulling & eating theirs & other flockmates feathers for the added protein. If you don't have access to a higher protein level feed, then adding some boss (black sunflower seeds) to their diet will increase their protein intake too.

Thanks. The feed we are giving then is 16% protein. And idk if you saw this, but my brahmas feathers have started growing back so im just gunna keep an eye on them for the next week or so to see what they do.

I glad to hear that the feathers are starting to grow back. My first winter with my birds I was feeding a 16% layer mash, we had a really frigid winter that year & my girls starting picking & eating each other feathers. Did some reading hear and went to an All Flock Raiser that is 20% protein. It helped a lot, having been feeding them that every since. I just offer oyster shell on the side. This year I've experimented with fermenting some of the All Flock Raiser. I do a 3 bucket system, using one bucket a day. Each pail ferments for 3 days. Right now I feed them in the AM with this then they have free choice of the dry all flock in the hanging feeders. I've been amazed with the results, my birds went thru their molts so much faster & they have layed the best I have ever had birds laying in the winter months. In fact, out of 24 laying hens in one coop I average 17-21 eggs a day. That is better than what they layed thru the summer last year. Best of luck with your birds
