I don't know if they're weaned or not? They were at the auction because their nanny was attacked by a dog. So I guess not weaned.

My brain flew into panic mode and I forgot everything I've tried to learn. I swear I've been reading for a month, at least. I was just expecting to buy with more info.

So are you bottle feeding them?

I will be. My farm friend up the road is stopping by this evening to check on me. Once my brain started unfreezing I remembered she raises goats and I called her. I called her a year ago in a panick when I brought home chickens the first time. I guess it's what I do.

your very welcome!  Let us know how it comes out!  oh and Plenty of pictures!
I switched all my metal feeders and watereeres out.  the old school ones are card on them in the winter
Never feed a warm feed to them during a cold spell either, it will give their wattles frost bit everytime.  I thought one year I was doing them good feeding their mash wet and warm with oatmeal and all their wattles event the girls got it!  I have too many to grab and slather Vaseline on all the time. plus they are not my friends so they are hard to get even in the coop at night they can be boogers

she and her daddy made the first incubator we have whites, she has been into it, just never let her do this part before.

:hugs

stands up, raises hand and flops back down on couch with a hack

Got 40 out of 42. Aussies, Buff Brahmas, Ameraucana and Barred Rocks and Sex Links I think,. I really should have marked the sex link eggs. Now I have no clue whats what. And I have two other hatches like this. LOL.

buff brahama is blue chick? look at those legs you congrats Tony!

Good morning, all!

I screwed up quoting, so I will try to do this from memory:

@daxigait - yeah, I had an ankle injury like that, torn ligaments, super technicolor. Took a while to heal, but totally fine now. I'd love to say it happened while I was saving a baby in a stroller form an oncoming 18 wheeler... but I slipped in the parking lot.

Thanks for the several of you who gave input on the hanging waterer. It's too hot here to rely entirely on nipple waterers in the summer (at least that makes me nervous - so I always like to have a second water source).

Whoever it was who said that they were timing their next hatch to occur DURING work, so that it would happen on its own (and less risk of wanting to do something) - I think you're on to something. I may try that once I get my temps and humidity corrected (and don't have all the malpos).

Shellee (sp?) thank you for sharing the wonderful story about your father.

Thanks for the get well wishes for my foot - it truly is mostly inconvenient/irritating, rather than severely painful, and I was just grumping about it. I rested a lot yesterday, but had chicken chores this morning that HAD to be done. I have the day off, and so I really need to take the opportunity today to get the lumber for the growout pens/tractors that I will be building. Once the lumber's here, I can do the sanding sitting down. While one will be a growout pen (so I have a couple weeks), one needs to be finished ASAP because I have some Speckled Sussex at 17 weeks who are in a little coop that is now too small for them (they roam in a paddock all day to mitigate this, but LOVE to escape!). They need a forever home and a boyfriend - Tank the Naked Neck (who stays in his paddock all day long) now escapes to roost on top of their coop (to watch over them) EVERY SINGLE NIGHT now. So there's some urgency to get this done.

Sourdough bread for the week is on second rise. Once done, I'll go on my lumber run. I also have to set up the NN paddock today. I have the egg eater in a crate in the NN coop for the day while I try to nail down who's laying what (thin-shelled-wise), running out to check nest boxes frequently (in case any of the others get bad ideas). So much to do...

Happy happy day, all!

Thats the problems with auctions. Never know what your getting. If they are not weaned you'll have to bottle feed them. Introduce a little hay and grower feed to them. To see if they will eat it. If they are not wean intrduce the hay and feed at small amounts everyday. Other they will cause blot in them. When ever you switch feed introduce slowly for at least a week.

Not blue. Grey smoky. Camera flash makes things look different. lol

@Sally Sunshine asked my to explain how I setup the auto turner in my homemade incubator. It should have been quite simple, I bought the part for $133 from Dickeys Incubators. It included the silver metal arm you see here, and the (crucial) gold colored cam directly behind it (you can only see a sliver of the gold piece in the photo. It has a timer motor built in that you can't really see here. The timer motor completes a revolution about every 2 hours and triggers the main motor that runs until the cam hits a switch to turn it off. The outer metal arm moves up or down with each cycle of the motor, pushing or pulling the trays with it.

The problems I had were with adjusting the height of the motor relative to the shelf and trays. I ended up using spacers that make the whole thing move when the trays shift and sort of jars the eggs in the trays. I'm not happy with it yet and need to redo it all at some point

Should they not have hay for bedding then? They both nibbled it as we were loading them.
