Than how does one improve upon the girls side of things if they only get retired every 3rd year?

I guess you just keep picking the best daughters each time. Eventually best sons + best daughters will improve both over time while keeping genetic integrity intact.

Wouldn't it be faster to remove inferior hens as you come across them and have a better replacement rather than waiting till year 3?

Well, probably, but I think the idea is to maintain a single "line" of chickens. Adding a new hen that looks good could work out great, but they may throw unknown problems into your flock that might take a generation or two to pop up. But early on it probably wouldn't hurt.

Edited to say, unless you mean replacing all mothers in one go with their daughters?

For a duck egg...how long is too long for an internal peep WITHOUT ANY extermal piping?? I candled the egg Sunday, that my f/w runner is sitting on and saw a duckling shadow moving in the AC and heard peeping. I candled again today (late afternoon) and there is no difference. the duckling has not even moved into the AC, it is still clear save the small shadow of the duckling.
Could it be unside down? should I assist? thanks

What's the status? If he has not externally pipped yet, I would make him a safe hole....

Too many variables for me to deal with starting with mixed birds. All my birds will come from the same person an flock. That gives a HUGE head start on weeding out undesireables... if any.

I mean the edit, sort of. If the daughter is better than the mother replace the mother or if the daughter of one hen is better than a different hen in the same pen replace the inferior hens with the superior youngsters.

@Sally Sunshine 30 turkey eggs in lockdown now.

Even with the incubator failure the other day, there was still a lot of movement in those eggs. It looks like they may be a day late though but I'm thrilled they're still alive. The hatch will be the true test.
