I'm so jealous! I live in a climate not conducive to avocado. My goal over the next 10 years is to develop an avocado tree that will produce on my property. I'm just starting the giant garden this year (been doing small patches and grow pots). I ordered my seed and will be outside as soon as the ground thaws until it freezes in December. If I can get a greenhouse built this year I'll buy a couple avocado trees to put in there. I could ramble on about gardening, considering I have a free moment at a computer rather than mobile, but I really shouldn't bog down the thread with dreaming of playing in the dirt.
Since when are you a relation?I can relate!
Shellee your awesome!! I pray you get them out just fine!! she does need chicks!!!!
I will add you awhile! who you getting the rocks from beaglady?
No problem. Are southerners even allowed north of the mason dixie?
Water in the reservoirs, sponges, and near the end just squeezing in water on the floor. Anything to get it up.
Mirror and feather duster for lone chicks. They freak out when the mirror is removed, running back to the spot where their imaginary friend used to appear. My Paula was a solo chick for about 4 days until I received new chicks to join her. Initially cried all night long - constantly. Searched and asked for help here on BYC, and on advice, got a hand mirror and mounted it against the wall of the brooder (mirror side down to bottom). She cuddled up to it and talked to her new friend that looked just like her. And I finally got some sleep.
You gotta get a post driver. It's a favorite tool. I have to do stuff like this myself, and I'm short, to boot. Lots of rocks in the soil. Tiring, but this is the best way.

Just don't drool on it. It's always been kind to you.Well I'm outta here to go have a nice long talk with my pillow.![]()
That's too long of a wait. Setting is 9 days from now which would be pushing it if they were local eggs laid today and optimal storage.will do but gonna need some help with that. I have been reading about marking the air cells but havent done it before. I have been using a dry hatch method on my own eggs which has worked but dont think it will go to well for these.
Also what do yall think the possibility of holding these till the Easter HAL are. The room I have them stays around 50-70% RH. And I have them in a styro carton now.

Gotta say, it's funny how people keep referring to Reese line of CCL. This is the 2nd post this evening. E. W. Reese was famous for his line of "Mohawk" RIR, while Jill Rees of England is famous for her line of CCL. Not trying to be a smart aleck, just don't want the two to get confused...![]()
Quote:I wasn't familiar with Reese until I started looking into heritage rhode island reds. He's pretty much responsible for the HRIR still being alive and well to this day...![]()
I know there are a few lines of CCL, and the Rees are supposed to be less chestnut colored than the others. I haven't researched them enough to find out the pros and cons of her line. I've only learned enough to know Jill Rees birds have a lot of show winners in England. As far as I know, most all breeders in the US have a combination of all the lines of CCL...

Some have Rees (the newest import), some don't, depends on when they started. It's "sexy" right now, but quite a few have been disappointed in having Rees chicks that they can't reliably sex, and greener eggs. Over on the CL thread, GaryDean has an excellent thorough description of the history of the lines that were imported. Greenfire is actually discontinuing their CLs, FWIW.
Nothing evil about the Rees line, but it needs more breeding work in the very things that most appeal to most folks about CLs (blue eggs, auto sexing, which were key goals of the guy who originally developed the breed). Probably too much (over)emphasis on adult feathering to win show ribbons. I was very happy that I could clearly tell the sex of every single chick as soon as it hatched (or even before, if I could see the head or eye). Useful info to have right away in an egg-laying breed.

Quote:All Rees CCL originated from Greenfire Farms. Others may be raising Greenfire stock and selling them as Rees. In fact, I found a place a couple of hours from home that sells them and advertises them as having the genes from all the strains that Greenfire has imported. Not sure if that's good or bad, but I intend to call them and ask...
I'll have to get clearance from my probation officer...
Not without a passport...
Good idea... thanks! I know daxigate has some from Greenfire in her bator now, so I'll be following her progress as well.
So true. I purchased eggs of 3 varieties of Marans eggs a few years ago that were touted to be from Wade and Davis lines. They definitely hadn't been selected well because the eggs were no darker than Orpington eggs.... Same with Marans - known to lay deep brown eggs, but if the breeder does not select for that intentionally, you end up with Marans that lay much lighter eggs. (Just like any breed, really...)

I would think Araucana would give you more pure blue than most Ameraucanas. While CLs are "typically" listed as blue egg layers, many of even the "bluest" ones folks have posted are greenish blue. In the UK, they can even lay more olive colored eggs (disallowed here in the US in the draft SOP). I'm wondering if Ameraucanas would be more blue-blue (but don't have any here at the moment to look at their eggs side by side to know - getting chicks in April). I'm sure someone else will pipe up who has more experience - I'm starting to think I shouldn't run my mouth any more on this.![]()
I've been wanting a specific breed of chicken that can only be shipped, either as hatching eggs or adults. I really wanted the experience so I figured hatching eggs. I'm getting them around June![]()

Happy!!!! I told my parents and they agreed to it. They were a bit skeptical though. Today I just calculated the cost of caring for the chickens. It's eight hundred dollars.
I'm actually scared of telling them.
Not lately it hasn't been.Just don't drool on it. It's always been kind to you.
