@campingshaws
, Poly Vi Sol has only 5 IU per 1ml. The Mercks manual says this:

"Only stabilized fat should be used in feeds. Adequate levels of stabilized vitamin E should be used in conjunction with a commercial antioxidant and at least 0.3 ppm selenium. Signs of exudative diathesis and muscular dystrophy due to vitamin E deficiency can be reversed if treatment is begun early by administering vitamin E through the feed or drinking water. Oral administration of a single dose of vitamin E (300 IU per bird) usually causes remission."

My capsules are 1000 IU, and I think I gave each chick a couple of drops. They were better a little the next day, and 100% normal after a second dose.

-Kathy

Kathy, did you also give selenium? I couldn't find it at Dollar General, but I can go to a pharmacy later.

I did not give selium because too much can be toxic. If I ever decide to give it I will search for the proper dose. Heck, maybe I should add that to my to do list.

Me, for one. I just don't think I could handle black chicken meat, although I think the live birds are striking...possibly due to their novelty.

Does black chicken taste a whole lot different than the rest... I know there are cultures out there that love to eat silkie meat.

I've been told it's full of antioxidants. I did not look this up for myself to verify.

They look interesting and pretty. I hope you enjoy them. They would sweat to death hear

Chickens don't have sweat glands. All my chickens are black except the skin and they do great in our heat. I think ACs would do as well with the big combs and wattles.

All black, organs and EVERYTHING is black. I saw where people were callin them the Lamborghini of chicken, because they are extremely expensive and I just happened to get mine for a great deal!

There was someone on the Old Folks Home thread that was raising them.

The epitame of "blackened chichen"... but I would have a hard time eating one. I like my chicken to be white(ish)....
Black skinned birds are a favorite in the Asian community. The Asian/Latin market (seafood city) near me has one of those open top meat freezers that is full of silkies. They look a little like Cornish Game Hens - except black.

Yes I agree I don't know how anyone could even think about eating that and even spending that much money just to eat them
I would think the fact that they are much bigger than silkies would make them a hit.

It's called "different strokes for different folks".
That's for sure.
I peruse the frozen food section at another Asian market in So. St. Lou and I'm amazed at what I find there. The things that look like 8" roaches are what really turn me off.

Good morning.... Incubator update. After all this time, I have found a more suitable place for my incubator... After struggling with the temperatures of 108 and stuff.. I have it fluctuating between 97 and 100 degrees.... Have not focused on the humidity yet... Is 97 degrees to low for the quail eggs?

I hope they weren't at 108 long. I gave up once after a week on 30 eggs that the LG subjected to swings from 92-108. I quit turning and forgot to remove the eggs.
I switched to broody hens putting new eggs under them. I went into the cellar and heard some noise. Checking it out, there were 2 chicks running around the incubator. Wild temp swings and no turning the last 2 weeks and they still hatched on their own.
You just can't kill these birds no matter how hard you try.

Wry neck chick is looking better and eating on its own, still not quite right I put my preprobiotic vits dry powder in its mouth, I know I didnt calculate how much it was getting  but I did it anyways! And with Vit E capsule drips I pinned a hole in the gel capsul and just put his beak to it and he took a drip of it, and I keep helping it to drink, I started that stuff last eve, gave more in the middle of the night and again around 5am this morning, its now cleaning its self, feeding crumbles off the papertowel and I saw it attempt a drink! and is more improved even since this video was taken. They're on day 7. I ended up receiving 16 shipped from GA, they looked good considering the single digit temps- only 3 saddles and none cracked. They're on day 3 today, will candle Wednesday maybe. This is an important hatch- I am basically a surrogate for new best Crazy Chicken Lady friend, [@=https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/39565/Jessimom]@Jessimom[/@], and her Remaining Buff Brahma eggs. She has had such a disaster with her "DeathBator"! When I set these, I don't think either of us planned on her hatches she had going (that filled her bators) would turn out so sad. I really want these 6 to make it, along with our 12 silkies left! She needs chicks!!! Hawk12 aka Kristie none of my last batch made I. I'm trying to pretend it never happened. I had the temp set too low and humidity too high. It was rough
1f622.png
My current batch should hatch this Saturday. I have 9 that are still kicking. They are brahmas again. Trying to get a big enough breeding stock. Right now I don't have a rooster and there will be no breeding without one I'm halfway into day 21 and no pips. There is movement by some of the eggs when I shine a light on them though. TrilliumAcres Thanks to your answers a few day ago and all the very valuable info that Sally Sunshine has put together I have 5 babies in the incubator with 2 eggs to go. First pip yesterday morning and first chick at around 6 pm last night. I woke up to 3 more chicks this morning and one more just hatched a few minutes ago. Math I incubate with the LG 9200.I set backyard mixed chicken eggs on Monday, February 15th for friends of ours. I set an incubator full. I think it was 68. Our friends need to replace brown egg layers. bauerdog aka Joanne The bator is all cleaned out and waiting for the next batch. For shipped eggs, should I ask for them to be shipped on Monday the 29th for setting on Saturday the 5th? It takes 2 to 3 days for the eggs to get to my place....just worried if I ask for wednesday, they may be held up by the good ole USPS DON956 Just set 48 eggs at 12pm central time. 2/19 12 RIR 12 Delaware 12 Plymouth Barred Rock 12 Golden Sex Link Due on the 11th of March, anyone else set eggs today? Roada Red I have 14 of my flocks eggs in the incubator today is day 8 and they are starting to form and they are mixed with my EE rooster and americauna hen that is also mixed with barred rock salmon faverole and silver penciled rock NaJoBeLe aka Nathan As far as status goes I plan to let my shipped eggs sit and recandle tonight. Will prbly try to set them this weekend. Need to clean out the bator and do some tweaking but should have a chance to get it ready by sat/sun. Plan at this point is to set the 12 Partridge Rock eggs I had shipped and do a staggered hatch with my Partridge Rock mixes for the HAL. First time with a staggered hatch so we will see how it goes. Should work out ok since I have the loose air cells I plan to use a egg carton and will use the auto turner for my eggs. Update on the shipped eggs with loose air cells..all but 3 seem to have reattached. Still plan to do the styro cartons with bottoms cut out for incubation. pjnbill22 We put. 9 midget white turkey eggs down this evening and hubby just went in to check the temp/humidity before going to bed. Everything looks great, but he heard a tapping sound. There are eighteen chicks in the room, but they were all sleeping. There are also 30+ assorted chicken eggs due to hatch tomorrow or Saturday in another incubator- I guess we have an EE who wants to get the worm, because one egg has a good sized pip hole in it and it keeps rocking back and forth! We're going to bed excited as if we were going to be grandparents again! I can hardly wait for morning Mirajane I won my EBay auction last night for my Ayam Cemani Eggs! I'm awaiting their arrival!
:thumbsup Looks like yall dont need me no more! Great job Chaos, I can retire in peace now. ;) -Banti

Having no desire to eat black chicken meat, I couldn't say. There also cultures that raise totally featherless chickens; just something I wouldn't enjoy seeing roaming around in my yard.
