I have yet to meet a kid that didn't like guns.
Except those raised by yuppy parents who thinks guns are evil because they are guns, with no regard for the fact that they are inanimate tools that in and of themselves can do no harm. Guns should be respected, not feared.

So i have been contemplating a new incubator because of taxes and starting my Ayam Cemani breeding. I am going to be working towards standard of perfection so I want the best possible one for the best possible deal. I was looking at cabinet if not a large brinsea. Any pros and cons to cabinet vs large brinsea.

I have a Brinsea Eco 20 with turner, a Hovabator Genesis, a GQF 1202 Sportsman w upgrade to digital thermostat, a brand new Dickey (dual wafer), and a cabinet incubator I built myself. They all work and once you understand how to operate them, all give about equal hatches.

Best "bang for the buck" is the Dickey. I like it at least as well as the Sportsman. Brinseas are good for casual use with small hatches, but cabinet incubators are so much larger capacity -- and trust me, someday you will need it.

I only have one huge shot gun.. Too big for me. I take the boys shooting. I would like to get them 22s... My guns are locked up. No access unless I get em.

I got me a broody serama! She has 3 eggs under her right now and my friend is going to bring me more serama eggs to put under her tomorrow! That means I won't set for the EHAL, but will still be around the same time.

Hi Sally

Firstly thank you for all your invaluable advice, you've been a great help.

I'm on my first hatch and made the mistake of setting Silkie (chicken) & khaki campbell (ducks) eggs together. (All at different stages)

I didn't realise at that point how different their humidity needs were, unfortunately when the chicks came time to hatch two drowned (which panicked me) so i helped the final two (in hindsight a bit early) and they didn't make it either.

I've tried to determine what went wrong by looking through your threads and I'm pretty sure the humidity was too high for them as they were swollen and wet.

I've got Khakis due from 1 weeks time and after reading on your thread that too low humidity is less bad than too high humidity I have brought the humidity down from 50-65% to between 30 & 50%

Their air cells range between normal small I'd say.

So my question is, should dropping the humidity so drastically allow the eggs to dry out a little and lose weight in time for hatching? OR could I have caused them worse damage?

I know the humidity needs to go up really high for lockdown on day 25 but I was wondering if 1 week at 30-40% will be time enough to correct any damage I may have done from too high humidity?

When I realised the chicks had died of too much humidity I emptied all the water out and started fresh. Since then I haven't added any water (1/2 days) and yet the humidity keeps climbing up to around 50% (i'm guessing this is water evaporating out of the eggs) I keep opening the bator every few hours to release it which lowers the humidity back down to around 30/40% and within an hour or so it's back up near 50% again.

Should I continue releasing the excess humidity until it stabilises?

So many questions, sorry! 1st timer and I know mistakes are inevitable but I don't want chicks/ducklings to suffer needlessly :(

Best wishes,

Vicky

@Abzonthefarm

Questions for you!
What day is lockdown and when is est hatch day?
Not quite sure I understand are you in lockdown now?
What bator are you using?
Fan or no Fan?
You should run 30 if your air cells need to loose. yes get rid of that humidity
You are adding water to the troughs or you have little containers above to get humidity in there?
Perhaps empty all water and switch to something above with the eggs or off to the side?
You understand humidity is NOT a set number, most of us begin incubation 25-35% the first week and then adjust as needed per air cell growth/weight loss.
You are running at what temps?
You have more than one thermo hygro and they had been calibrated?
You have rotated your eggs around the bator at candles?
Have you misted or washed the eggs?
where they shipped or your own eggs/local eggs?
How old were the eggs at set?
How old is your flock?
Turner or no turner?
Incubated upright or horizontal?

Can you get pics uploaded of your marked air cells by chance?

Hello I have 18 chicken eggs in my homemade incubator with a fan should I turn off the fan on hatching day?

Alright so, funny story. I went in to check on the stored eggs and realized the egg turner had moved. So im looking at it thinking maybe its not supposed to move yet... then it hit me. Biggest facepalm moment of my life. I forgot to set it up properly. So in the middle of fixing it the eggs came out (yes i forgot to remove those too) and one broke. The other is fine tho. But i got it fixed. Going out to collect more eggs now.
