If I need help with a chick who pipped on the wrong end, is this the thread I can get help in? Or is there a better one somewhere?

Here's my situation. I had 2 broody hens. They hatched 6 eggs, and kicked over the rest of the nest. When I got home, there was 8 eggs that were cold and dirty. I put them in the incubator, and 3 have hatched so far. The others look like they'll go tomorrow or the next day.

Except Pip. Pip pipped on the wrong end. He hasn't gone further than that since yesterday mid morning. The area where he poked the shell off was turning brown.

I went ahead tonight, and broke some of the shell off, without piercing the inner membrane.

It still needs more time for the veins to dry up and absorb the yolk. It's almost there.

Here's my dilemma. How can I keep the inner membrane from drying up and shrink wrapping it? I wrapped it in a damp paper towel on the air cell end, but I'm worried about drowning it.

Am I doing okay? I obviously messed up and should have left it longer, but the others zipped a lot sooner than this guy has. It's been almost 30 or so hours since it pipped. And, it pipped the wrong end.

Have you tried the article on assisting in the hatch? Though it sounds like you know what you're doing.

I don't have a lot of experience, but I have assisted a few chicks that were malpositioned and pipped the wrong end. Some made it, one didn't.

One of the things Sally always says is to remember that when they pip at the wrong end like that, it is a simultaneous internal and external pip. I think that emphasis is to remind us that we need to be more patient because usually/normally there is an internal pip, then wait a while, then external pip, then wait a while, then zip. Such that (as you have discovered) they may not be ready with regards to blood vessels and yolk.

Can you put it in a little bowl with a wet sponge or paper towel, perhaps, to increase local humidity? Other than that, I'd wait some more (sounds like you are doing that). Then maybe try to help again very slowly and carefully? It can breathe, so no rush, I think...

I would turn the pip downwards to any liquid can run off the egg, and not into the hole. Then keep the paper towel damp.

The chick my take another 24 hours before if starts to unzip. If the egg was not in a great place under the broody, and was not rotated around by her, then it could have been incubated at a slightly lower temp which may explain the fact that it is running behind the others.

Erg second gosling is alive still, barely. Still no external pip. When removing bits of shell, noticed the veins still in the inner membrane as I hit one. Put back in the bator for a while. Gonna be a long night...

@Sally Sunshine hatch is over. 30 hatched out of 35. Totally shocked. I expected much worse than that

Use a mug of water or another container with a smaller surface area. It isn't the depth, it's the width.

Like MC said it's the surface area of water that adds to the overall humidity. I cut up a styro egg carton and am using two of the egg wells as water wells, works great.
