Hatch update!! (One of 4 sets in Bator).

Seems that 39 eggs were due this week.

36 hatch.
One Bcm pipped wrong end and DIS (ugh my fault as put in egg box to hatch upside down. Couldn't see aircell and egg oval).
2 Swedish black hen chicks just DIS -perfect and ready to hatch but didn't.

Funny thing is I took out the first 30 chicks. And there were a couple of chicks left. Then there were more chicks but the same number of eggs.

Seems that a couple still in upper shelves had hatched and joined their buddies.

They have all gone to my friend now. Cl, SBH, BCMS, BF, orps mostly.

I see so many people that use different humidity settings in their incubator. Some say from 30 to 35% and some up to 60 and 65%. What's a safe percent to use. I live in Texas.

I run the 30 - 35 the first 18 days, we bump it up to 60 - 70% the last 3 days during lockdown.




Hi everyone, egg mystery solved. I am getting extremely forgetful.... I guess a week or so ago, I found someone up in Oregon that sells Salmon Favorelle eggs. It was after I found out that my sole SF that hatched was a boy. I guess I sent them money and then they sent eggs. It was right around the time I won a couple of auctions and I forgot all about these. I didn't get a tracking notice when they shipped them, and I had forgot all about them.

So, I now have 13 Salmon Favorelle eggs that I need to find room for in the incubators. Last night I added 21 Brahma/Wyandottes for a neighbor of @gotro17 who lost several of their chickens because of a neighbor's dog.

Time to go look at the 'bators and see what I have in there, and where I can squeeze more eggs....

Second, DOES ANYONE HAVE AN INCUBATOR THEY CAN AFFORD TO SHIP OUT TODAY TO CALIFORNIA FOR A MONTH?
The eggs need to sit anyway. The incubator should be to you in a few days... If anyone can let you borrow one.

OK thank you. I may have to use no water cause its probably gonna be over 35 dry bating them. I ran a test run for 2 days with a humidity monitor from Wal mart and it was reading 47% with no water.

Thanks!! But I'm good. I just plugged in my Incuview. I think if I can get that up and running for a few days, I can put in all MY silkie eggs that are currently brewing.

Since I just added eggs last night, for my comfort with staggered hatches, I'd like to wait 3 days to add these anyway. That gives me plenty of time to get the "deathbator" up and running and if I can figure out why nothing hatched in it before. I'd like to get these eggs into my Brinsea. But, I problem I have is with their rails to keep the eggs in. I set all the rails to hold silkie and bantam EE eggs. These eggs won't even come close to fitting in, so I think I'll have to take the rail out entirely and see if I can just use padding to hold them in place.

On even better news, I had a friend hatch a couple of silkies for me over Thanksgiving. She gave them back a few months ago. They are currently hanging out with the rest of my silkies. Two buffs. Appears 1 boy and 1 girl. They stay glued to each other and avoid the other silkies. We THINK SHE just started laying. Is 4 months too early for her to start?

After the couple of fires recently among members with heat lamps I decided to brood with the Sunbeam heating pad. While throwing out a broken space heater I realized that the grill from it would make a perfect frame for it so I scavenged it. This should be enough space to brood 50 to 75 coturnix chicks> I am just wondering which way I should lay the pad though.

OK thank you. I may have to use no water cause its probably gonna be over 35 dry bating them. I ran a test run for 2 days with a humidity monitor from Wal mart and it was reading 47% with no water.

Have you calibrated the monitor? I have 6 different ones and they range by more than 20%. I was told to calibrate by taking a shot glass (or equivilant) and filling it with NON iodized salt. Put enough water in the salt to make it slushy, but not wet. Put that in a tupperware container or a zip lock bag with the monitor. Leave it for 12 hours and it should read 75%. If it is off, make a note of the difference and adjust what you think the actual percentage is by that amount.

I am currently running 20% in mine, so I added a couple of damp sponges, bringing it up to 40%. My air cells were a little bigger than I wanted on my 7 day candle, so I am ok running at 40% for a little while.

Humidity does not really have a set number in the beginning. As long as you keep an eye on your air cells, just use it to control the moisture loss in YOUR eggs.

I am not the guru that most in this thread are (that is why I am stalking it -- to learn more ... well, that and because it is a hilarious thread), BUT I am in Texas and can share wha I did here for my first hatch.

I am in College Station -- full on spring mode and not the driest part if the state. I did a dry incubation , keeping my humidity around 35%. Without water, my hovabator hung out around 25-30% so I didn't have to add tons of water days 1-17. I candled days 7/14/18 to monitor air cells and everyone stayed on track.

Day 18, I added water I'm all four chambers and was able to get the humidity to about 65%. To get higher than that, I had to add a folded, wet paper towel .... BUT, I also discovered that once chicks started hatching (which was day 20 for me), the humidity shot up and stayed around 74%. Next time, I won't worry about the wet paper towel -- the hatchlings added plenty of humidity on their own.

As of now, 15 of 18 have hatched and two eggs have pipped. Not sure if the last one will or not (it was a Marans Egg so I was never able to candle it).

Also -- thanks to those who chimed in last night when I was freaked out, thinking I had chicks with open navels. I ended up waiting and watching and eventually realized they were fine!!! Just came out with gunk in different places than the previous chicks had. All is well.

BUT ... I do have another "First Time Hatch Mama" question that I posted in the board because I didn't want to bother you all again ... but it has been an hour since I posted and I am concerned about too much time going by and missing my window.

15 of our 18 eggs hatched yesterday. Of the three left, I thought only one had pipped -- I just pulled out the oldest and completely dry babies because it was getting nuts in there and a bantam egg was getting knocked around like crazy.

I discovered one of the eggs that I thought had NOT pipped had indeed pipped but the hole was upside down and that open area had been sitting in some gunk and had gotten stuck to the floor. I pried it up, not realizing it was pipped till after I had lifted it -- the pipped area -- shell bits and membrane -- were kind of glued down to the mat.

It is now right side up and I can see the chick breathing but I have no idea how long the chick had been like that, etc. I am just watching it now but when should I make the call that it is time to help? It has now been an hour and it hasn't attempted to peck, move, etc. Just breathing.

Advice?
