INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

Also -- thanks to those who chimed in last night when I was freaked out, thinking I had chicks with open navels. I ended up waiting and watching and eventually realized they were fine!!! Just came out with gunk in different places than the previous chicks had. All is well. :)

BUT ... I do have another "First Time Hatch Mama" question that I posted in the board because I didn't want to bother you all again ... but it has been an hour since I posted and I am concerned about too much time going by and missing my window.

15 of our 18 eggs hatched yesterday. Of the three left, I thought only one had pipped -- I just pulled out the oldest and completely dry babies because it was getting nuts in there and a bantam egg was getting knocked around like crazy.

I discovered one of the eggs that I thought had NOT pipped had indeed pipped but the hole was upside down and that open area had been sitting in some gunk and had gotten stuck to the floor. I pried it up, not realizing it was pipped till after I had lifted it -- the pipped area -- shell bits and membrane -- were kind of glued down to the mat.

It is now right side up and I can see the chick breathing but I have no idea how long the chick had been like that, etc. I am just watching it now but when should I make the call that it is time to help? It has now been an hour and it hasn't attempted to peck, move, etc. Just breathing.

Advice?

Don't know if this has been answered yet but check on page one of this forum. Look for eggs UNHATCHED at end of incubation. Lots of good information there on page one

One of them's a good actor; isn't Swayze gone?  Didn't he die a few years back, or was he just sick as h3ll?

He died Sept. 14, 2009

It would be too wordy to have gone into that. People still watch "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" so he's still technically an actor. :p

@LocalYokel

Hey LocalYokel is it possible to build my own heating element? I was thinking I needed better coverage of the eggs. I've lots of 1/8 copper ground wire

Any things possible

Cal rod is better , or I think it's a tungsten type element that would be bendable.

Why not just use heat flextape?

Can we see your bator? Fan speed can have ALOT to do with these things

I am not the guru that most in this thread are (that is why I am stalking it -- to learn more ... well, that and because it is a hilarious thread), BUT I am in Texas and can share wha I did here for my first hatch.

I am in College Station -- full on spring mode and not the driest part if the state. I did a dry incubation , keeping my humidity around 35%. Without water, my hovabator hung out around 25-30% so I didn't have to add tons of water days 1-17. I candled days 7/14/18 to monitor air cells and everyone stayed on track.

Day 18, I added water I'm all four chambers and was able to get the humidity to about 65%. To get higher than that, I had to add a folded, wet paper towel .... BUT, I also discovered that once chicks started hatching (which was day 20 for me), the humidity shot up and stayed around 74%. Next time, I won't worry about the wet paper towel -- the hatchlings added plenty of humidity on their own.

As of now, 15 of 18 have hatched and two eggs have pipped. Not sure if the last one will or not (it was a Marans Egg so I was never able to candle it).
thank you. Here in Texas the humidity is not stable. Usually always high. Thanks again for the input.

@Sally Sunshine broody Lagertha hatched three chicks and has four eggs left!

I found one outside the nest last night, cold but still alive. Tucked it in my bosom while I tried to get pics of the gross bugs, then put it back in the nest. Still alive today! I was afraid she had kicked it out on purpose.
did you preth dust the area? Congrats Lagertha!!!!

No,not the air cell that was day 7or14 it a lot bigger one and has dipped down toward one side and I put that facing up. ms,@Sally Sunshine

Good Job CH!!
Never mind Wafer ordered....

Candle results 3/12!!!!!

11/12 live and nice veins, #12 is a clear.... But I left it in, cuz one can never be to sure.

On 3+ of them... I SAW IT MOVE... No joke!!! 2 other people did too, and I wasn't holding the egg (had it on a stand thing) so I wasn't shaking it!!
wee.gif

It was moving back and forth slightly, and getting darker and lighter.. That was so amazing... One of Jace's moved, and the other has good veins.... Ohh, I lost track of how many moved, and I suspect if I had more time I woulda seen close to all of them move!!

Do embryos move day 7, or is I hallucinating?

Hatch update!! (One of 4 sets in Bator).

Seems that 39 eggs were due this week.

36 hatch.
One Bcm pipped wrong end and DIS (ugh my fault as put in egg box to hatch upside down. Couldn't see aircell and egg oval).
2 Swedish black hen chicks just DIS -perfect and ready to hatch but didn't.

Funny thing is I took out the first 30 chicks. And there were a couple of chicks left. Then there were more chicks but the same number of eggs.

Seems that a couple still in upper shelves had hatched and joined their buddies.

They have all gone to my friend now. Cl, SBH, BCMS, BF, orps mostly.

awwwwwwww a box full of colors!! all ye need is some reds in there!!!!!! Congrats!!!!
Morning/afternoon everyone. Coops are clean and bleaced (husband laughed when he came home to me vacuuming out the coops). Today I will be arranging roosts and hopefully adding poop boards. What does everyone suggest sand or sawdust for the boards?
I think sand is what is good not?

After the couple of fires recently among members with heat lamps I decided to brood with the Sunbeam heating pad. While throwing out a broken space heater I realized that the grill from it would make a perfect frame for it so I scavenged it. This should be enough space to brood 50 to 75 coturnix chicks> I am just wondering which way I should lay the pad though.

The Grill

This way with the rest covered with a towel or

this way?
SCOREEEEEEEEEEEEEE yer smart!!!!

I have no clue what to tell you, set the thermostat under and run it and see what is best warmth wise first? @Ur-ur-ur-urrr

So far so good candled eggs day 5 and the polish ones are doing great even the ones that are in the incubator whooohoooooooo:celebrate

Have you calibrated the monitor? I have 6 different ones and they range by more than 20%.  I was told to calibrate by taking a shot glass (or equivilant) and filling it with NON iodized salt.  Put enough water in the salt to make it slushy, but not wet.  Put that in a tupperware container or a zip lock bag with the monitor.  Leave it for 12 hours and it should read 75%.  If it is off, make a note of the difference and adjust what you think the actual percentage is by that amount.

I am currently running 20% in mine, so I added a couple of damp sponges, bringing it up to 40%.  My air cells were a little bigger than I wanted on my 7 day candle, so I am ok running at 40% for a little while.

Humidity does not really have a set number in the beginning.  As long as you keep an eye on your air cells, just use it to control the moisture loss in YOUR eggs.

Good luck!!!
thank you so much. I'll try calibrating the monitor. I have another meter coming from eBay but not sure if it's gonna be true either.it's the small one with the lead wire on it. Thanks again for your time and help.

I think the fan placement is why I needed to turn it up more that the last hatches. I also add 3 of the small fans to this hatch. The thin one in second picture brings air up from bottom of eggs and blows to the heating element. Thanks
