Hey y'all - any thoughts with this one??? Will it be ok?? I had a couple that had partially zipped but couldn't finish (all night) I helped both very carefully...the first one I helped is fine...this one was a bit shrink wrapped...& it pushed the bottom of its shell off itself but it's just been laying there...breathing seems ok but I'm just wondering if it's really weak and resting or not doing well??

Seems like you can see a tiny bit of egg yolk near its hind end but I'm not sure if it's fully absorbed or hats just the gunk that falls off upon hatching...(humidity at 65%) and I had placed those wet paper towels in there while it was still in shell due to the shrink wrapping...its cheeping...but just kinda laying there like that...

Just leave it to rest for now or?? It's legs are trembling...but I've left the one sibling chick in there to encourage it...I have to leave soon and I'm worried about it...:-(

I just did a spot check with my infrared thermometer...it says 104.2 degrees...that can't be right but it's an automotive thermometer...up to 3000 degrees if it was that got the eggs would have cooked a long time ago....I'm gonna tend to believe the Brinsea thermometer.....and the medical calibrated thermometer...but they both show the temps being a little low.

Good morning Phil hope all is well with your wife.

My temps are also lower this time. At least by the calibrated thermometers the ones I've always used. I wanted it lower as the temps before have peaked to 102. Then I second guessed myself then entire time but left it low. They are still hatching early but cleaner than ever. I'm also fighting to keep humidity up to 55% even with the 10 that have hatched so far. No assistance this time sink or swim. So far so good all the eggs from this hatch are from hens of the broody in the wild that I thought had been eaten by something so all her chicks hatched unassisted by humans anyways. Curious to see the out come of this test.

I need a quick answer:
How many chicks should my Welsummer mama have? Right now she has six babies and 3 more pipped. And, I have 2 chicks in my Bator and 3 trying to hatch. Well, what Ik trying to ask is should I give my broody silkie some Chicks so that the Welsummer doesn't have too many and kill them?

I aas wondering how all of you guys got started into the wonderful world of poultry and was hoping to hear some good storys.

Growing up we had two farms, a small farm in the suburbs with about 100 laying hens in a big henhouse that free ranged an orchard, vineyard and big rhubarb patch. Egg sales supplemented the produce from the farm.
The other was a 100 acre farm farther out where we raised cattle, hogs, horses and pheasant.
After a long adult hiatus, I needed a source of manure when the stable near my house closed. I decided chickens would be perfect. I started with 10 DP pullets. After building a second coop, chicken tractor and pens, I decided I needed more for eggs and meat. Through an accident in ordering late in the season, I went from 10 bird to 100 in the course of a week. At the time I had 21 breeds and have had well over 30 over the years.
I've settled on my favorite breed and other than the Black Penedesencas I breed, I only have one other bird. She's a 7 year old Ameraucana that still lays well.

Our kids came home from the carnival with 3 chicks about 35 years ago. The chicks grew into 2 roosters & a hen. We had no coop or run, so the birds roamed the property at will 'til something got the hen. The then-grown roosters got mean, to the point that the kids were afraid to go outside; exit 2 roosters.

Fast forward 20 yrs... my son & his wife were here visiting from WI. They went out alone one day, and came back with some chicks that the DIL had fallen in love with. They went & bought a supply of 1x3's & chicken wire, & a coop was born. When their vacation came to a close, they went back to WI, leaving the chicks behind, which I needed like another hole in my head. Two coops (soon to be 3) and 3 flocks later, I'm still keeping chickens; will as long as I'm able. I only have 5 hens & a rooster, and only incubate for replacements, but I like having them around, and we certainly enjoy the fresh eggs.
Great story.

I went to Tractor Supply to look for fencing for my first real garden. I was so amused by the "country hick store" that I began to walk around, looking at all the country people decorations. And then I heard it. The sound of hundreds of chicks peeping, calling for their mother. I was raised that chicks were cute, but they grew up to be ugly, smelly, dirty chickens. Guess who changed everyone's mind? I have a sister coming in a month or so to get some of my chicks.
Btw, all of my chicks the first year rode home on the motorcycle.

Another good one. I'm sure they enjoyed their first ride.

So just wondering does anyone want to start a thread for those who can't get any eggs to hatch or even pip. We could all complain together it would be a blast!

I must mention though it is fun seeing all these chicks!

Yes. You start it.

They should have a Easter egg dying competition.

Good idea. Go LSU.
Alright so im putting electrical tape on its foot, any objections?
Not stiff enough. Medical tape is my first choice.

Chicken Hawk the best one to answer that

@lozerface79 you can also put a piece of light cardboard on the bottom as a shoe with medical tape. (Think cereal or some other really light food box).

You could put it in a clear container inside the bator to dry up a bit. The other one might get curious and peck at it.

I woke up to a similar one this morning, no assist, but not fully absorbed. Unfortunately it had come into contact with something sharp and was covered in blood(not sure if it was egg shell or one of the others pecking at it)
Managed to stop the bleeding, but too late
It passed a few minutes ago when I went to check on it.

Try to protect it in some manner and wait it out. My little one was not meant to be
