morning Sallys thread, I have a question please. I had sticky chicks pretty bad last 2 hatches.  Havent figured it out yet.  Til, someone reminded me I am storing my eggs improperly . I was going to set them but I wonder if it is a waste of time ? I have had them in a basket on my counter top 10 days being the oldest without turning . My house is kept fairly cool. about 70 degrees.   Would you set them ? 

I've had refrigerated eggs that were never turned hatch. I think they were at least a week old. Could have got lucky.

I'm seeing 0/6 of the babies and 17/19 of the older chickens. I know each one separately but they keep moving around too much for me to figure out who's missing... Out of the babies I had my first two leghorns from my hatch.

That sucks. I keep all of our predators thinned down completely here but one always sneaks through, it's inevitable. All you can do is secure the best you can. We have about a 100+ that free range during the day but are locked up secure at night. Our breeding stock are housed 24/7 with runs. Yesterday we had a dog nail a few of our free range birds before he got a 53gr injection. Haven't lost a free range bird in over a year until yesterday.

That sucks. I keep all of our predators thinned down completely here but one always sneaks through, it's inevitable. All you can do is secure the best you can. We have about a 100+ that free range during the day but are locked up secure at night. Our breeding stock are housed 24/7 with runs. Yesterday we had a dog nail a few of our free range birds before he got a 53gr injection. Haven't lost a free range bird in over a year until yesterday.

I am with you, I go after the predators. If our dogs don't scare them off and they really want to eat my birds, I will shoot them. I had to warn one neighbor quite a few times before he got it. I could tell he loved his dog but the first time I saw a bird in it's mouth I was going to shoot. Took me three warning shots and several calls but now his dog has a shock collar on.

This dog was actively trying to break into two of my chicken yards. My dogs busted him every time though.

I had to scare an owl off this morning. My Roo was out in the dark ready to take it on after it went after and scared his hens. I didn't realize a couple girls roosted outside last night and when my Roo heard the commotion, he was out there fast.

The predator that killed the most in one night was two skunks. They killed exactly 50 chickens in one night after digging under my run. Took me two nights but they were both neutralized. I trapped one at the sight of the first break in and busted the second one the next night digging a new hole. I almost got sprayed as I surprised him so he got a bullet right up his bum.

Got the rest of the supplies for the coop! Gonna be a long day but here we go.

I'm pretty mad right now, a fox decided to go into the baby chicken tractor and get all 6. Or at least I can't find any of them. The fox also got in with the big chickens and a couple I can't find, but 5 have come back. We shot at the fox but it ran.

Some one correct me please, but I assume that sticky chicks would be due to temp being too low, humidity too high. (unless you mean that the chicks were dry). So, eggs sitting on the counter would likely be starting the process with larger air cells than eggs that had been stored in higher humidity environment. So... if you monitor air cells to accommodate, you should be fine. If last hatches were too wet, you could compensate for this one by running dryer through day 18, or hatching upright in cartons.

Dispatching 5 skinny Roos today. Wish they were fatter but I tried. We will eat them anyway. QUESTION: if I want to go ahead and butcher them down and debone them, do I need to wait three days for rigor to pass or can I go ahead and do it when I clean them?

I thought that a 3 day rest to get rid of rigor would be a good thing, whether chickens were left whole, or boned. I learned through mistake that I SHOULD not freeze immediately after processing. I thought that they could do the 3 day set after thawing... not so!

Yeah it's been real windy here the last couple of days too...we have several wind turbines around here on the Great Lakes....allot of wind coming off the lakes.
Sweet....I used to have too 900 watt generators in my yard...but because I am so close to an airport...I cannot have then high enough to do any good.so I sold them...they ended up in Australia.......
I'm a little worried about my eggs...it got down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit ...I woke up the house was down to 45 before I kicked th heat on....I was afraid to even look at the bator....but hopefully it kept up.....when I turned the eggs later it was at 101.....

Your eggs should be fine. Many hatches survive a lengthy chill without damage. It's like a cyclone here today.

I tossed the eggs that were definitely dead. Several that I wasn't sure of, got to stay. Some I was positive were dead had some movement. Not sure if it was b/c the contents were just swirling, or if there was life, real or imagined movement... Will check again in a few days. I have one RP turkey dancing. The other 3 died. What do I do with ONE RP????

Lazy , I did all that. 2nd hatch I went dry til lock down . I went by air cells instead of hydrometer . I also hatched them in a carton. They were wet sticky. I had to bathe them so they would fluff. They reminded me of little glue sticks running around.

My ducks are free range all day....locked up tight at night.

I have more problems with my neighbor dog...killed three ducks last year...I've warned him I'll kill his dog.....I've shot at it to scare it....but last week it was back down here......I didn't see it or I would have ended it then......wolves are keeping most of the other predators in check....coyote and foxes avoid them...and they don't come in so I guess that's one advantage to having so many wolves around.
