Yep, they lay during the winter months. Nov-March I believe. And I don't really want to put in another 2 months of egg care right now.

I guess that's why there aren't as many of them around as chickens. Where are they native? They must be related to the Ostrich

@ChickenCanoe I don't think I clarified that it was used coffee grounds that we put out that saved the tree from the ants.

My EHAL kiddos are getting the BOOT to the grow out pen today. Then I need to clean brooders again and get set for this weekend's hatch!!!

I know for sure a couple of my exchequer leghorns from the EHAL are cockerels - one of them is now inclined to constantly perch on the water and is already trying to "crow@ - it's kinda pathetic and hilarious all at once

I have one of those. It is good for a smile every morning when I go open the coop. I am glad my dual purpose cockerels have not gotten into the game since that would be a dozen of them.

Well guys, things aren't looking too good for my Emu eggs

My egg that was wiggling and peeping is now dreadfully still and silent. There's also another stinker in there. I can't find it when I sniff test each egg individually, but I can smell it when I open the incubator. Oh well, hubby said I can try again next year when eggs become available again. Someday, I will have Emu in my pasture!

On a brighter note, I picked this little cockerel up from the post office yesterday! When he gets out of quarantine, he's got some pretty ladies waiting for him! My chickens are about to get REAL funky!!!!!!

i think she is an EE, its a light pink egg, i have no idea which of my chickens lays which eggs, i thought they were all laying ( i only have 4) i was getting 1 green/blue egg, and some brown eggs-with the brown eggs you could tell it was more than 1 hen becuase they were different shades/sizes etc. But i'll take the new pink eggs

Yea, I'm bummed out about it, but these things happen. I'd prefer to just buy chicks, but I've been having trouble locating them and I don't think they can be shipped. There are a couple of farms here in TN, I may try contacting them to see if they sell them or can atleast point me in the right direction!

Not positive on duck eggs, but chicken eggs would still be viable. A few folks here have even taken fertile eggs out of the 'fridge & successfully incubated them. I'd think duck eggs would be the same @MotorcycleChick

I figured that. We don't go through as much as when I drank coffee and my wife always throws them away before I can get to them.

Just ask her to save them in a Tupper until you have enough to put out. We just put them out each day or two until we got a good ring around it.
@howfunkyisurchicken I am sorry about the Emu especially after the long wait. Are you sure they have all quit?
