Hi Sally, truly a farrowing crate would have saved them. I can see keeping the sow in one for several days. By the time they were five or six days old they were quite capable of getting out of her way. She also spent most of that time they letting them feed. She stepped on the first one when she was having the last two babies after I left thinking she was done. The other two were on the third day she would not use the shelter that had somewhere for them to get away from her. We had a very cool morning and it rained a lot. She got up they burrowed in the hay and I lost the other two and had the other stepped on when she laid back down at least that is what it looked like when I got home that night. It is a great lesson in how necessary a crate is with a sow, especially a first timer.
 
Got home and had 3 external pips in the bator, did chicken chores, and decided to go catch the last of the sunshine with the family for some minor league ball.

Blue Wheaten Sulmtaler, Black Crested Polish, Mille Fleur D'Uccle, Black Copper Maran, Olive eggers, Biefielders, Blue/Buff Cochin and Silkies! For a friend, I'm hatching Black and Blue Copper Marans, Lavender Orpingtons and Cochins. Lots of babies!! 4 staggered hatches in there. The Sulmtalers should be hatching today. Had 1 pip when I left for work.
 
Mine are mixed backyard mutts.. Moms are 2 reds, 1 buff, 1 barred rock, 1 EE, 2 mixed breeds from the last 2 previous years Dad is one I hatched last spring from my mixed breed roo/barred rock mom.
