Hi Sally, truly a farrowing crate would have saved them. I can see keeping the sow in one for several days. By the time they were five or six days old they were quite capable of getting out of her way. She also spent most of that time they letting them feed. She stepped on the first one when she was having the last two babies after I left thinking she was done. The other two were on the third day she would not use the shelter that had somewhere for them to get away from her. We had a very cool morning and it rained a lot. She got up they burrowed in the hay and I lost the other two and had the other stepped on when she laid back down at least that is what it looked like when I got home that night. It is a great lesson in how necessary a crate is with a sow, especially a first timer.:/ good to here on the broody though
