It happens to all of us.

It's good to test any new technique.
I had always brooded on paper towels for the first 3 or 4 days and then on shavings.
I switched to sand once and most of the chicks ate too much sand and died. I should have kept a closer eye on them or just tried it on a couple.

I need to learn how to sex chicks.

but it feels weird telling someone its a pullet or roo, when I'm not confident!!

I always sell chicks as "straight-run". The only exception I would make would be sex-links. Even those could be sold as "straight-run" as well. If you're giving them away, I would just add the disclaimer that until it lays an egg or crows, it could still go either way. I wouldn't guarantee it unless I was 100% positive. Some breeds are easier to sex than others also. Like Chickencanoe said, even the trained professionals get vent sexing wrong sometimes.

Okay, eggtopsied. After thinking about it, I knew I'd regret not knowing if there was anything really informative......

All were dead, the wyandotte was stinky dead.

No evidence of anything that physically would have prevented hatching. They had big yolk sacks. I'm leaning towards improper tempature at lockdown, which would explain why only the bantam hatched....

She had a nipple system that stopped working, this was her first time using it.So she then offered water in a normal waterer and we think they drank to much at once.

If it was a bowl type set up or regular waterer and there were no marbles or stones in it (AND if they were new chicks) chances are, they drown. Putting marbles or stones in their water prevents them from sticking their beaks in too far and aspirating water into their lungs, which can kill them.

"Firsty two" went to her new home with one of Jace's brood and a chick from my EHAL hatch. New owner is sending me lots of pics, and says firsty thinks the EHAL chick is her momma!

Had any made an internal pip? Sorry my curiosity is getting the best of me. Do you think the lockdown temp was too high, or too low?

Nope.

Too high, I think. Pretty sure I measured temp at too low a level for LF...... I think I have correct height for when they are in the turner, but I was brain-dead and didn't think of the fact LF are bigger than bantams (which I had measured for at my last hatch) and therefore need higher level measurement when they hit lockdown.

I think my lockdown temps have been high as well. That's the reason I asked. I know the last 2 hatches I had were pretty bad. I was guessing too high of humidity early in incubation, but I'm not sure. Just trying to collect as much info as possible!
