I always tell people you can not calibrate a thermometer using just the ice water method and expect absolute accuracy at incubation temps. I work at a dairy plant, all calibrations for the HTST's are done with state certified glass mercury thermometers, pasteurization temps are done with a hot water bath for the probes, the cold side is done with ice bath, BOTH with a state certified glass mercury thermometer to boot. Calibrations if possible should be done as close to the temp desired as possible, IMHO of course. Kinda hard to do at incu temp though.

It's not always idyllic. Temps can range from -28C to 45C.
Most years we get sufficient rain to make things pretty lush. You just can't keep things from growing from April to June. It's like a green explosion.
While their size is no longer impressive, these are the oldest mountains on the continent.
There's some beautiful country in these old hills.
Probably why I haven't moved yet.

I was down there once, in '94, short stop at St Louis, then a bus ride to Ft Leonard Wood. Beautiful down there, much like here, but it was 50-60s here in June, felt like I walked into a microwave, and some days it rained with no clouds in the sky it was so humid... I survived though and loved it.

Sometimes you don't know if you're sweating or getting rained on.
People from other parts of the country don't understand why it doesn't cool down at night.

Fort Leonard Wood is one of the prettiest areas of the state. The Big Piney river flows through it.

With all this lushness comes a great variety of wildlife and with that come predators.
My place is a wildlife habitat certified by the National Wildlife Federation.

It is a habitat but not a sanctuary. I just set 2 raccoon traps.

Sick bird is still coughing but the humidifier is helping. She doesn't rattle anymore, just coughs. Eating a little and drinking some. Hopefully this blows over in a week or two.

I've been wondering abut the consequences of all this since their mother died when they were two weeks old, so it's not unexpected, and I mostly haven't let myself get too attached - I find one of them sort of adorable (and she got a name), but am trying not to think about that if I have to cull. I just remind myself that I don't want them to suffer...

Shhhhhh not so loud! I don't want my ducks to hear that I love dogs this much! They might revolt and call me names, like "The Bad Pea-Giver" or "That Awful Thing That Brings Us (may we live forever) Peas." 

Weeeeeell, I just remembered that my thermometer hadn't been calibrated correctly when my dad tested the bator temp with another thermometer and it read differently. Then, suddenly, I remembered what MC said about calibrating thermometers. I just calibrated my mercury thermometer the RIGHT way. It was two degrees off.   What else is going to go wrong? Are the eggs gonna jump up and start singing "Weeeeeeee will never haaaaaaaaaaaaatch"?

Ummm it read 34 when it shoulda been 32, so its too high. So it should read 104, right?

Oh, I thought it was supposed to be 102 (I have a still air), so I've kept it at that. So, I've actually had it about right?
Should I have done the boiling water test instead to make sure it's right? Thank you.

Ditto dat. I ran my still air at 102, top of egg, and ran my forced air 101........ Hatch went great in the forced air, and still working on actually cleaning (and repairing) the still air properly, so I'm not using it at the moment.

I don't think any birds incubate at 102.

I thought you wanted to run 102 at top, so it would be 99.5 internal temp?
