INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

Thanks to everybody who helped me out the other night with my hatch-2 spunky serama chicks both doing great go far-hatched 1 day apart. Today is day 20 for my other 2 so will see in the next couple days if anything else hatches-I have some shipped silkie eggs in there too. The ones that hatched were from my 2 seramas-proud parents Barry and Patty!

You have read the assisting hatching article, right?

Yes I have read it so many times lol. All these chicks we malpositioned. The 1 I lost pipped into the wrong egg. I lost it when I was trying to make sure it had air. I struck a vein. the first I lost I was trying to follow the directions and wait until absolutely necessary. I just waited to long. When I opened the shell it was perfectly formed. No yoke and the veins had receded. It just became weak. That one really got to me because I had heard it chirping only a few hours before. The last one I assisted had all sorts of stuff going on. I don't regret assisting it. I think it would have died if I left it alone. It had been internally pipped for over 24 hours by the time I helped and it was fading away from exhaustion. It came out a little deformed looking but it's shaping out better now so we will see.

So sorry about the ones that died!! Hopefully the sickly one gets better.

Thank you it was really heartbreaking. I'll admit I spent a bit of time crying my eyes out last night. I'm a firm believer tears don't change anything so now I'm just doing my best to help my sticky chick.

Congratulations!!! Go chickies go!!! I don't take out babies until they are dry and fluffy.

Next time, I would suggest taking out the turner. It's tough on the little legs. You can use an egg carton (with the bottoms cut out} if you want to hatch upright!

Seeing these pictures of hatching eggs makes my stomach fall-- how can I take responsibility for such an enterprise when I have no idea what I am doing?? (Nevermind that I lived at the poultry unit at Cal Poly and was responsible for tens of thousands of birds.... That was many years ago!).

Congrats Silverhair on your new chicks! So adorable, thank you for the updates! How fun.

Aww, it never gets old. I have a broody mama for the first time in a long time..have I shared her photos? I posted them everywhere it seems..like no one has ever seen a mama hen. But here goes anyway!

the dad is a RR mom I think is Barred Rock, this being the 1st real hatch I'm learning, next time is a new step,

You are doing a great job for your first hatch!! It is absolutely addicting. I had to give up all my roosters, so these eggs I"m hatching are the last of my own eggs, but I have so many babies right now, that's probably a good thing!

You should have some cute chicks! A barred RR? More photos once they are dry and fluffy please!!!
