@Jessimom It's only after 9 where you are. We are just after 10 here. Not late for us. Still light out there I suppose.

They are not going to realize that they are sitting on infertile eggs. Either you need to give them some day old chicks, some fertile eggs, or break them. If they have been sitting for more than a month, I would opt for breaking them or giving them chicks.
I have 3 broodies in my big laying hens pen. They are nesting boxes that are 4 feet off the ground. They are in blue home depot buckets, so I just lifted up one of the buckets to move her into a lower section I had used netting to close off. The 2nd broody was trying to bully her way into the 3rds bucket. So, I grabbed the chicken and moved her into a nesting box I had down below. She never got in the box, and pushed her way out of the area. So, tomorrow I'll see if I can move another bucket, with another broody, to give her a couple of fertile eggs to hatch. The 3rd one that didn't want to stay in the lower area will get some frozen water bottles tomorrow.

And by breaking them, she means, breaking the broody hens, not the eggs.

Yes I'm a night owl. I just got back in from a final check on all the coops. Needed a flashlight to see in the coops, but not to walk out there and back.

Good luck on your broody..I just put 5 babies under mine. Well, I put 7 at first..she did NOT like the two silkies. I had to take them out. Not sure why???? Anyway, she's been a wonderful first time mom once we took care of that little problem.

I have a silkie that is sitting on eggs - I have no idea how fertile or how old, and 1 chick that hatched 5 days ago. My first white silkie baby!!!!! The babies will be probably 3 days old -- can I still sneak them under a broody?

Congrats on the 5 she did take. Where did you put the silkie babies? That is odd she didn't take them....

Many years ago, I was living at a ski resort.  I had gone south for a few days and was driving back up the mountain LATE at night.  Came around a corner and 3 deer were in the road - a momma with 2 babies.  I slammed on my brakes and aimed for the gap between the babies as I started to slide.  I BARELY clipped the head of one, but I caught the backend of the other.  The mom took off.  I was hysterical.  I dragged both babies off the side of the road, got in my car and drove home.  While I had been away, one of my roommates had about 20 friends come up visiting - sleeping on the floor.  I woke EVERYONE up, when I called my folks crying about my crashed car and dead babies.  I hung up the phone, and about 10 of them asked me why I didn't throw the babies in my trunk.  I just cried harder and went up to my room.

I don't believe anyone tags road kill around here - nobody cared about my dead baby deer.  I drove down a few days later, and there was no sign of them, so somebody ate em, but it wasn't going to be me!

i screamed and cried when i ran over a chipmunk in high school
and have only hit one other animal since, and was very upset but kept it together
i care about the deer you hit :hugs

Shalom liz
Do you hunt?

I just brought the silkies back into the house. I had some EE's hatching, so they are now with those out in the grow out nursery.

If you are going to sneak some babies to a mom..I suggest you are there to go out and take a look every 15 mins. You can tell if she is ignoring, or pecking on one, it will stay away from her! At least, that's what happened with mine. I wondered, why won't that chick go under her? Then, when she moved once, and that baby tried to go, I saw her peck on her. So, in they both came. So, yes, 3 days, if the mama has been sitting for a while, she would probably be fine..if she is going to be a good mom. Make sense. Some just aren't. You wont want to wait any longer though. The babies will be the ones..to be afraid of her.

Good luck! I hatched out 6 white silkie babies this yr. and now also 5 splash babies! I love them. Will be deciding later on which ones I want to keep.
