Solar disinfection -tip how to use the hot summer sun for the benefit of your chickens
A lot of parasites use the ground as a intermediate medium in between infection of your flock. Fungi, bacteria , worms, coci, and viruses including the dreaded MDV .
You can eliminate this parasites from your coop and run by a simple act. (That could be only if you have the time, hot sun and patience!) The method is called solar desinfectio. The principal is very easy, you cover your coop floor and your run with a transparent polyethylene sheets ( plastic) put on it some stone or bagg full with sand for fixing it on the ground, and live it in the sun for a week or more.
The green house effect that occur under the plastic sheet will rase the temp to a degree that will kill almost everything in the top soil!
In Israel the farmers use that method on entire fields!
It is very recommended when you change flocks, after you took out the first, and before entering the second.

The neighbors have brought in the sheep as a firebreak control.

Devil weeds sound as bad as foxtail

Some people call it poison ivy, I call it devil weed.

Just recieved our incubator today (incuview)! Gonna run it for a few days to see how it tests then planning to set on the full moon next week, the 19th.

We are going to set 15 of our own eggs, barnyard mix of dark egg layers, easter/olive eggers and a couple Andalusian. Also setting 12 BCM/blue/splash from a hatchery a few cities away.

Any tips or pointers that I wouldn't find in the forums would be great.

Good morning everyone. I wish I could capture the beautiful Red Dawn we had this morning, but there is not enough light.

For those of you that have had broodies I have a question. I need to balance the eggs that are still hatching and the chicks that started last night in the evening. The Broody is in a high box in a coop that is too crowded. I built Coop that the Broody and her chicks can stay in while I am on vacation. I have to leave in the morning, and the chicks from last night we'll have to eat and drink soon. When would you move her?

The Broody is in a high box in a coop that is too crowded. I built Coop that the Broody and her chicks can stay in while I am on vacation. I have to leave in the morning, and the chicks from last night we'll have to eat and drink soon. When would you move her?

lol...I'm sure a lot of you are going what?  Don't you just love how I come in every 200 or so posts, and do catch up...on some posts?    Some of you may or may not remember where, when that was talked about by now.  Sorry.  I only come in once in a while...I'm worried about little ducky.
