Most Americans haven't used the language they learned in school. We don't have many opportunities to do so.
I've used my French, Spanish and German. I've been to several Latin American countries and Spain. My daughter, who had 4 years of German in high school, was shocked in her senior year when I took the kids to Austria for a ski trip and after not using German in years, I could communicate better than she. She's not one to give me credit for much, but I was shocked when she asked how I learned all that. I never had formal German classes but I lived in communities with no English speakers.
My son had 4 years of Chinese in high school - another of these strict Catholic schools. He's been to China and although he hasn't pursued it like I would appreciate, he can communicate a little and write.
verb conjugation is a big problem for me in any language
I do that too.
I'll be speaking Spanish and my kids will remind me that during a conversation, I threw in a German word.
It made sense to me. Maybe that was the reason for the blank look from the person to whom I was speaking.
