Get off my lawn
Quote: Yeah, I figured it was that, but thought I'd check. This boy really suffered in the heat more than any of the others, and they would knock the waterer around so it would spill then he would burrow down in the wet bedding under it all day, so that makes sense (despite the mister being outside in the shade - silly chicken).
It called keel blister or Brest blister Google it for images am info read this. Thanks! Glad it didn't get any further. I'll have to cut out that bit of skin before freezing, I suppose. And this is what a severe case might look like:

Quote: For some reason the hornets that occasionally like to nest under the eaves near the house and by doors have gone into overdrive in the past day or two - even starting two mini nests on the same door to where the fridge/freezer is (almost got stung today when setting chicken carcasses to chill). TONS of little nests. I don't like to use pesticide type products, but I draw a line at hornets nests against the house. I spray in the early AM or at night - I actually was impatient so I sprayed and ran this evening...![]()
I've always heard that DC are much heavier than they look. Have you been pleased with them? I'd like to cross them with NNs one day. Sorry it was so hot for you. I started super early, and was able to get 9 done, but it was 92F when I stopped, so a wee bit hot. (it got to about 100F today - it's been that pretty much daily).Well I'm disappointed with my project roosters. The Dark Cornish beat by about 1/2 pound At least on the two I weighed. Not an average by any means but I did not expect that much difference especially since the DC is a week younger. I had to weigh them again as I thought the scale went wacky. DC actually looked smaller
Calling it a day for butchering at 5 roosters. 102 in the shade.
I haven't weighed mine yet - I will when I prep them for freezing (after I cull I usually just toss then in the fridge in plastic bags, too tired to do too much more carcass clean up on the day of). Of course, the four heaviest birds are the ones that I kept, so these are all the smaller ones... Only one GNH in the group (and he has a cross beak), so not sure what the weights will tell me.
