I take it you are getting mostly eggs smaller than standard.
All you can do is go for it and set the largest eggs you have that are the appropriate color.

I've had birds off and on for 6 decades but have only been breeding chickens about 7 years.
That isn't a great deal of experience so I defer to those that have been breeding much longer than I for guidance.
I'm hoping that they increase there size in a couple weeks but I doubt they will. Yes the eggs are currently smaller then standard. I've got several nice cockerels that I would like to keep as potential breeders but I don't have enough hens to keep everybody somewhat happy and feathered. Egg color of the two girls who are laying has been consistent and the appropriate color, I just wish they were a little bit bigger.
Well you've got 7 more yrs of experience than I do

I am going to make them all grab a book and read for two hours!!! see how that grabs them!!!
That will encourage them to take a nap.

Yes Austrian origin. That would be great if you could translate. The one site you have me says comb slightly bent is good. Doesn't say flopped. The other three are slightly bent. These combs are shorter in height than the standard meds. They almost make an s shape looking from the top down.
I'm not sure about the comb but the color of that one is also different lighter like Sulmtaler just not big enough. The guy I got them from also has Sulmtaler.
I've asked on the Altsteirers thread if anyone knows the standard there. After looking at their pictures the flopped comb is fine

Wife says we can get her so now I've just got to work out shipping arrangements with Brice. Don't want to ship in this heat.

Thanks again. Stay cool over there. We're supposed to reach 108 today but I don't think it will. Day started cooler than what a 108 day would. We will see

I would definitely wait to ship till this heat dome goes away. You don't want to kill a bird with such a small gene pool.
I would ship an adult bird when the temperature is zero but I wouldn't ship if there was a chance of it going over 80.

Did you see my post about the fact that in Austria they aren't all that standardized?

If your bird looks more like a sulmtaler and he has them, I would be a bit concerned about that.

With Black Penedesencas, there is only one hatchery that carries them. They admit they've lost the white earlobe in their birds. A friend got some from there and some of those ended up with 5 toes.

How did that happen?

its going to be tough if she is already bone thin in front, sorry about her. I wish you the best, please let us know how it goes, you may want to send some poo to the vet and see if they show worms or cocci just in case, and perhaps you want to send her off for testing. Good Luck

very odd!!!! sounds like you did everything correct, what about in the bator, did you have anything on the floor in it?

How old are they?

If they're pullets, I'd just wait longer.
Do you have housing options to keep the cockerels separated a while? I've had some cockerels I didn't want to use and kept as backups. However when they got older, they looked better than my primaries.

What breed are you talking about?

I just thought it would be a good use of the meat. Call it an impromptu family reunion.
That's why I like using a real keyboard. I can type, I just can't use those little cave man keyboards.

Yep..... And when it is high humidity out? Forget it!
