I am sorry to say that the schools (four I think. Maybe five) I attended my junior and senior years did not require much of a student to graduate. I never took any language class except speech therapy when I moved from Massachusetts. I finished my education after my sophomore year. Too bad. I was bright. Took my SAT's in the seventh grade. All advanced classes since the sixth. What a waste.

Too bad. The story of the American education system. I had a year of Spanish in 5th grade. Then the ROTC school made me learn Spanish well so I didn't get beaten with a pipe every day.
No formal education but living in Germany 2 years, I'm most comfortable with that.
6 semesters of French in college.
Spent enough time in the Yucatan to be able to communicate sufficiently in Mayan to get around. Weren't they surprised.

My son had some Spanish in grade school but 4 years of Chinese in high school.
My daughter had German in high school and Italian in college.
My wife can't even bring herself to ask where the bathroom is in Spanish after 15 visits to Mexico and Costa Rica.
