Hi Pensmaster! Glad you got one of them to take the eggs.

Not sure yet Mike. Hopefully when I go home from work she'll be on them. Quite a sight I was I'm sure catching a chicken in my work clothes, eggs cracking trying to get a flapping hen out of a rock. Hoping i wasn't farm fresh when I got to work. :lau
I have one more hen to try if not. I think I'll give them some eggs they are used to to start

Cut shells is an old poaching trick....people use it during bird season to harvest illegal deer.
I don't know any poachers so I never heard of it.

@ChickenCanoe Hi, I do have an Ameraucana cock. I think the CL is bigger.
Do you have a means of weighing them? Do you know what color egg the Ameraucana came out of?

@ChickenCanoe , DH has a theory... When make a large batch, people would be tempted to just dump the bag into 128 gallons, and he thinks that the powder might not mix as sell that way. By putting the whole bag in one gallon one can shake, stir, whatever to ensure all the powder dissolves.

Very good theory. I bet that's it.
I don't mix my probiotic powder with feed for that reason. I mix it with their water.
Like pouring cornstarch directly into pan drippings to make gravy.

Have you guys seen the smile for the camera shot of Usain Bolt as he ran an won his third gold in the 100 meter? Crazy but awesome shot.
I missed it live but I saw the race replayed this morning. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday last night at Broadway Oyster Bar. She's gone on a canoe trip today (her actual Bday)

Okaaayyy, VERY strange.

(Note: I did exactly what I'm going to say after this, nothing else, and no, I am not drunk)

I turned the thermostat up about a quarter turn, same thing I did last time, that produced no results. This time, it went up!!!

And up..... And up.......

It hit 104 in just a few min. Nothing to worry 'bout, internal temp was fine. Okay, so it works now. I turn it down to where it was before that had produced 98. 30 min later, still 102. What????

I turned it a WHOLE REVOLUTION down. It is now at 100.5 and working fine. As a recap, I had it 1 1/2 turns higher than it is now and it was at 98. What on earth!??

And I am sure I am turning it the same way every time.... And there is no way anyone else meddled with it.

Maybe the screw is sticking and it was screwing itself in and out of the wafer instead of turning it very much??
I think you're right. Don't mess with anything as long as it's working. But after this hatch, I'd take it apart and clean it.

@ChickenCanoe and @Sally Sunshine , just got of the phone with Bimeda, the makers of SMZ-Med 454, and they said the shelf life of the stock solution is only 7 days. They also said those with small flocks could use 1 tablespoon per two gallons, which is about 1.5 teaspoons per gallon.

Good to know.

do u know what week to start giving chickens cracked corn

You never have to give them cracked corn. Corn is already the main ingredient in most poultry feeds.
If you give scratch grains, they shouldn't make up more than 5-10% of the diet.
Any age CAN eat cracked corn but not until you've provided insoluble grit for them in the appropriate size for the age of the bird.

I never give anything but chicken feed to chicks up till they're at least 10 weeks except what they get when foraging.

Keep in mind that corn is one of the least nutritious seeds and especially low in essential amino acids. At the same time, you want chicks, to get the most nutrition possible. Chick starter/grower has all the nutrients chicks are known to need in the appropriate ratios. Adding other things to that complete feed invariably limits that optimal nutrition.

In my opinion cracked corn is waste if money, it us almost 100 starch, as white bred is. If you want to give corn it is better to give it whole grain, because the Whole kernel contain some oil that the cracked loose. If you sprout it you improve its nutritional value.
