Morning all!

I closed off the coop that my broody is in yesterday and you would have thought I started world war III.... the hens have been going crazy trying to get in there, they actually tore apart part of my fencing trying to get in there! There is a nice, clean coop, with 2 VERY nice nesting boxes for them and they refuse to go in there. CRAZY! Hopefully they will chill out and go in there and get to laying soon. Yesterday they paced around the front of the coop where my broody is singing their "I need to lay an egg" song, but would not go in the other coop.

Checked on my broody this morning, she is keeping all 12 eggs under her now and hopefully will stay on them! I have not tried to look at them again as that one was rockin' and rollin' yesterday morning and I don't want to cause an issue if it has pipped.

Hopefully they figure it out soon.

I have a broody hen so I got these beautiful rainbow eggs from @h2oratt to hatch! I'll be setting them today.

If she's talking what I'm thinking, it's like pumpkin pie, with the filling being corn, rather than pumpkin.

I would much rather have pumpkin. I make it without a crust anymore to help with calories.

Yup, oil heat. Coal heat was taken out of the house, and the chimney in the garage is in too poor of shape to use.

This house (1903) was built with a coal chute, coal room and a coal burning boiler. Later it was converted to a gas boiler to heat the radiators in each room.
The fireplace is also a coal burner. There are two chimneys side by side for both the boiler and the fireplace.
The coal flue is too small and the fire box too tall and narrow for a wood fire.
I plan on enlarging the fireplace, tying it into the larger coal boiler flue and perhaps adding a smaller, efficient gas boiler to heat the paved sections of the property for snowmelt.
Heating the house is no longer with radiators even though they are still in place. There are 2 forced air gas furnaces, one on each floor.
Coal smoke pollution was so bad here by the 1920s that the Missouri Botanical Garden was convinced the tropical plants wouldn't survive the lack of sunlight and smoky air. They bought a property about 40 miles west, to where they were planning on moving all the sensitive plants - especially the expansive and expensive orchid collection.
It was estimated that people in the city inhaled 15 tablespoons of soot in a 5 day winter period.

Have any of you used food grade peroxide for water tanks. I had a vet and several people suggest it while I was on vacation.

I haven't but may try it. I've wrapped my water barrels to prevent sunlight from causing algae growth.

As creatures of habit, perhaps it would have been better to move the broody to the new nests rather than cause the rest of the flock to change their choice of favorite nests.

When I had hens in a chicken tractor. There was a nest box in it but they would dig their way out of the tractor so they could run back to the coop to lay in their favorite nest.

As for corn, I like corn soup. There's a Mexican restaurant near me that has a corn/tomato soup to die for.

Hi, it said I was viewing, but I was out of contact in a cave not ignoring you.

Was it one of those ex-quarry, warehousing caves along the west side of the state?

Kind of like a Woods Coop. Doors slide to the left, need to add led to bottom yet. Small fan on them when it's really hot. Don't remember demensions.I crawl in it to gather eggs and care first them. Use a scoop for a litter box to clean droppings etc. Will shut up now so others can talk.

Are the doors screen or hardware cloth? Hardware cloth.

CC, I assume she's digging moles. She'll trot down the road then dive into the brush and start digging. She'll dive in after snakes, too. And frogs, lizards, armadillos, whatever moves! Live chasing squirrels and rabbits. Last spring she dug up a bunny nest and brought me a baby with eyes still closed. A week later she ran down a baby bunny and caught it. DH said "leave the rabbits alone!" And she dropped it and it darted into a bush. She occasionally bowls the chickens, but other than that she leaves them totally alone.

Sounds like a farm dog. I know farm dogs always kept wildlife around the house to a minimum. I now have a Pomeranian that can't catch anything. My property is also a NWF certified wildlife habitat. Walking to the chicken coops perhaps 100' from the house, I'll encounter snakes, frogs, toads, lizards, squirrels and rabbits in the same walk. Rabbits sometimes come within 5 feet from me. Here's the pom. **************** Here's some of the birds I hatched this summer. Birds hatched May 30 headed for bed at dusk. Some of the chicks that hatched from June 26 to July 20. These hatched July 30 and August 10. You can see how easy it is to tell cockerels at a week or two of age with Penedesencas.

I too hated canned creamed corn as a kid. A corn casserole is a different animal, although I can see your apprehension.
I'll have to get the recipe for this corn tomato soup and send it to you. You'll be hooked.

I find history interesting. Especially local and when it ties into my property or activities.
