I pass Meyers when I take the dogs herding, I've been very good. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming they should have broad breasted, they have in the past anyways.

I love turkey meat. Hubby isn't a fan of butchering, but I would love to have some small turkey's to have a flock where we can butcher our own turkey meat and keep some in the freezer. I just have to convince him it's a good idea.

I'd think that Meyer being on the way would be like woodcrafters for me when I was really making pens.

I love turkey meat. Hubby isn't a fan of butchering, but I would love to have some small turkey's to have a flock where we can butcher our own turkey meat and keep some in the freezer. I just have to convince him it's a good idea.

Try the Heritage if you want smaller. Double beasted get huge. I tried to start with Narragansett but my Tom was in bad shape one day when I came home. Lost him. Was going to butcher the hens at thanksgiving but the day I went to get them they started to lay eggs. They laid very well for quite some time.

Lovely chicken friends. I have a Bielefelder Cockerel, who in his bid to save our flock from a raccoon, suffered many face lacerations. None were immediately life threatening but in the last 2 hours his face has swollen immensely.

1) I assume this is normal and not a sign of hidden respiratory issues?

2) Is there anything I can give him to help reduce the swelling

3) Should he get anitbiotics? None of the wounds seem deep.

4) Do chickens get rabies?

5) what would you do?

Yeah. I don't mind turkey eggs, and keeping a flock around where we could butcher a few a year, would work perfect for us. I love whole roasted turkeys, and our roaster is small. It can't accomodate a 40-50lbs bird. but a 20lbs bird is perfect. That's like 3-4 meals worth of meat for our family!

Only mammals can be infected with rabies and potentially transmit the disease. Species that pose no risk of a rabies direct transmission include avians (e.g.,chickens, ducks, geese, hawks, eagles, owls, and even vultures), reptiles (lizards, turtles, etc.), and amphibians (e.g., frogs).

I would try to get the swelling down. Can you ice the injuries?

The swelling is pretty normal with lacerations. I would clean the wounds, and at the minimum put something like neosporin without pain relief on the cuts. No on the rabies. Might want to isolate him from the flock.

Can you at least CALL them, to get some advice?

I would get an ice bag, and hold it to his face. LOL He may not like it, so i'd wrap him in a towel. But, to get the swelling down, I'd make him accept the ice for 5-10 minutes at a time, just to help control it.

Animals don't like ice, but they don't always know what's good for them.

I'm sure someone can link you a list of antibiotics, and pain/swelling medications you can use. I haven't had to triage a bird yet. I've only found mine dead, or alive. No injuries so far.
