Do you guys have peacocks? My daughter wants some, and her dad told me (quietly on the side to ask about personal experiences with them.) He heard the males can be ornery.
I have them, and they are really loud during breeding season. Hand raised males often become aggressive towards people, so that's something to consider if you're the type that like to pet and coo on you birds. Additionally, they are much harder to raise than chickens or ducks... Several people in the peafowl forum have lost quite a few in the last 10-14 days... I think the number is close to 12 birds dead now.

LOL!!!Why do people like the naked neck chicks so much? Don't they risk getting sunburned?
they look healthy, duck looks muscovy, i would say caruncles
make sure you rotate them around, there could be hot/cold spots
So I am on day 7 and 8 with quite a few eggs (over 50), and 8 of them are these Gen 8-10 Olive Egger eggs... SUPER dark green/brown... I can't see in most of them AT ALL... A couple I can faintly see residual light at the bottom, gives me hope that means growth since black at the top... How on earth does anyone candle and hatch these? Do they all go to the end because you just can't see?
@BantyChooks hatching is on hold. Currently watching Marek's rip through my flock.
gross sorry!!!Ok, thanks. I finally figured out that weird metallic like smell. A black yolk.., found it yesterday. Since I have 3 bators side by side it made it hard to figure out which one it was. I didn't find it by smell either, candling revealed it, surprised in the kitchen when opening them and doing the eggtopsies. Pretty sure the last incubator I got his having continual heat spikes as several of the eggs tossed were good at 3 days, not at 7... 2 developed to about 5 or 6 days... I moved the remaining eggs into my first incubator, which was mostly responsible for my marans making it as far as they did... I have new thermometers on the way, but still got a few days I need these guys to go till I can see how off my first extra thermometer might have been... I see the draw of home made incubators now![]()
YAYYYYY
swimming in chicks@BantyChooks I hatched 3 eggs in the incubator (3 EEs and 1 Marans/Orp cross), the broodies hatched 1 egg (EE), and I also got 9 chicks in the mail. They are all doing great now. I have 13 chicks. Swimming in chicks. My yard is going to be a disaster. They are soooo cute though.![]()
Lovely chicken friends. I have a Bielefelder Cockerel, who in his bid to save our flock from a raccoon, suffered many face lacerations. None were immediately life threatening but in the last 2 hours his face has swollen immensely.
1) I assume this is normal and not a sign of hidden respiratory issues?
2) Is there anything I can give him to help reduce the swelling
3) Should he get anitbiotics? None of the wounds seem deep.
4) Do chickens get rabies?
5) what would you do?
No drugs yet, the swelling only really started in the last hour or so. I will separate him for rest. I don't even know how I would ice his face.
No more vet visits for my chickens as per my husband's demands. Otherwise I would be there already. :-(
maybe some tylan or baytril, how is he now??
cuties, good luck lol
do you have a bator for hatching?? one bator wont workThis hatch I am doing is going to be a staggered hatch cause the eggs that weren't doing anything I have been replacing them with more eggs.
whats the point in unplugging for 5 days LOLWoo Hoo!!! I just pulled the last chick and unplugged the incubator for the first time since early May. I've had staggered hatches all summer.
I'm setting about a dozen olive eggers next Tuesday or Wednesday but I won't set any more Penedesencas till probably December.
I haven't done an official head count in a while but I think I have about 80 birds now.
Getting close to time to butcher some cockerels.
agreedI prefer natural.... Who wants to eat plastic?
time to go get trainedWe've got one, I am untrained so I was waiting on the hubs to get it.
Yeah, I hope the swelling goes down soon so he can see to eat and drink.
nopei probably should have asked before giving it to the chickens, but they ate my left over nachos with my goats.... cheese and sour cream won't hurt them, right? LOL
i agree on the talk you all had on this subject crazinessThey'll be fine. Perhaps a bit salty for a daily diet but OK once in a while.
That's the beauty of chickens. They can get most of our leftovers as long as we provide a mostly balanced diet.
I have guns and am pro gun but our Missouri Legislature just overdid it.
They overrode the governors veto of a bill allowing ANYONE to carry a concealed weapon WITHOUT A PERMIT or TRAINING OF ANY KIND.
Law enforcement all over the state was against it.
IMHO, everyone should know how to safely handle, load, unload, use the safety and shoot a variety of firearms whether they like them or not or whether they intend to use them or not. They are everywhere in this country so it's akin to being able to drive a stick shift whether you ever own one or not.
yes!I don't disagree. I know that most of my own discomfort with hand guns is from not being raised around them at all. My brothers got BB guns when I was a kid and they promptly started shooting each other with them. They were then made to destroy the guns and that was the end of guns in my mom's house. I never got trained with guns of any kind, though I did recreationally shoot with friends once or twice. Once all my kids are in school this year I can make time to go to a gun range and practice.
I would like to see gun safety taught in schools, like they do with home ec and other life skills.
The state slogan has been changed from the Show-Me state to the Shoot-Me state.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/16/opinion/missouri-the-shoot-me-state.html?_r=0
Anyone, convicted criminals, wife abusers, drug dealers, criminally insane, can now legally carry concealed weapons here. No permit, not training, no background check, nothing.
That is insane.
looks like tape to me but @casportponyNeed some help, friends... I seem to have worms in my flock. I've spent most of my Sunday following around poopers to see who has the overload- So far, just one OE 9 week old and two hens... I'm afraid it looks like tapeworm segments but want your expert opinions... What do I do now? I assume I need to worm the flock of 30... Is there an easier way than another to worm that many without having to catch each one? I realize the loose stool is a bad sign too! All are acting ok though...that I can tell. Also- what have I been doing wrong?!? I am meticulous about keeping the coop and run clean. They have about 800 square feet.

so happy for her! her body put energy into healing not growing, dont know if she'll catch upMira returned to the coop Friday evening. She's quite a bit smaller than all of her sisters/brother now but she's doing well and eating good. She has to find her new place in the pecking order now which is looking like the very bottom at the moment but she's not getting beaten up, just pecked here and there. She's still very people friendly though. She's learned her name during her time in the house and will come when called and hop up in my lap![]()

I always want fluff butts lol@BantyChooks -are you who I am supposed to tag to get added? I have 8 Ayam Cermani, 30 BCM's, about 40 Serama, 5 Cream legbar, 5 Icelandic, 5 mottled java, 3 watermaels, 4 brahmas, 2 favorelles & 2 orps and a partridge in a pear tree.....lol. Due to hatch between 9/27 & 10/5. @Sally Sunshine SET THOSE DUCKIES!!! @DwayneNLiz want babies!!!!
The yummy kind
lolIt's weird talking to people on here and not knowing what you all look like! Some of you have a pic of yourself as your avatar but some don't. I would like to see who everybody is!!!!!
so much fun!
Letters? Postcards? What are these things of which you speak? Do they have emoji's?
This makes you look very young, if i took a pic like this all you would see is grey hair lol
Yes!!!except for a smile while sipping on a nice red wine![]()
I wanted a pony... DENIED!!!! or a goat or a pig... he says no more farm animals lol. But he does love the ducks!!! He must be in kahoots with @DwayneNLiz
so true!!He could probably make a gourmet meal out of an old shoe.
Love it!!Random that I forgot to share yesterday.
We were at church yesterday, between Sunday School and the morning service, and a bunch of kids came running to me and said, "Come quick Ms. Heather, we need your help! There's an emergency outside!" So I of course run with them, thinking something is seriously wrong with someone, and they keep running, me following... there was a chicken in the back of the church yard. LOL! "Ms. Heather you have to save it!" So, I caught the chicken (which was completely fine), and found it's home, on the other side of the church yard there is a community garden with a chicken coop and ducks, and bees. Put it up and went back to teach my class during the service. After church, the kids came running to me again, for a second chicken "emergency". I sent my daughter that time, she caught two more chickens and put them up. Then we investigated and found that something had dug a big hole and the chickens were getting out of that hole. Anyway, official crazy chicken lady at church now too!
Both Yums!!The sweet tea or the potato salad?
For those of you like me that are learning goats, be advised the doe went from no obvious signs to total loss of control in her back half (needing help up, total collapses of rear, and uncoordinated back end in less than a day).
The drugs are helping, but it is wait and see at the moment.
did you steal me a zebra?? I really want one lolWe took my 2 year old to an african safari for his birthday.
His favorite part? The goats.
They even had chickens there!
The zebra's scared my kids, it was really pushy LOL
The ostrich and emu's traumatized my oldest because they attacked the windows because they wanted the "food" inside that we got for the animals.... but my oldest is traumatized by the big birds. He's also traumatized by Geese. There's a goose at a park near us, that has chased him everytime he's gone there... LOL
i am going to, and i am in NHSo 3 chicks total have hatched from this batch. I'm going to float test the rest of them and see if I get any movement because they are going on about 3 days late hatching as of today. Do ya'll hatch through the winter? I was thinking this would be my last attempt at hatching in my incubator since it will start to get cold in a couple weeks and I am not set up to have indoor chickens! lol I live in the panhandle of Texas and the average first freeze is October 15th.
the air cells will grow at different rates and hatch dates will vary greatly, not a good ideaWell, I candled my eggs, and 1 had a blood ring, so I tossed it.
Out of the 7 remaining, 4-5 look viable, with blood veins, and a couple look clear, but have dark spots that developed, so i'll give them a little chance to catch up. if they continue to change and look like they are developing, i'll keep them in there. I should know more in a few days. I'm crossing my fingers that the 4-5 that are developing, will hatch. When I get my bigger incubator, I may try a bigger batch of silkie eggs, and duck eggs together.
I get a very common 3-10F in the winter, lolEvery winter we have a day or 2 that the temp wil ho down to a staggering 3C!normally the temp in January is araound 10C.![]()
So sorry!!!So yesterday I decided to move my little naked necks from their little brick enclosure into a bigger cage. Well, everything seemed to go great and they were super happy. But this morning, I woke up to see a dead chick laying out side the pen. So,I walked out there to go check it out. When I got closer, I saw the the the huge boulders by the door had been moved and a huge hole had been dug leading into the pen. It looked like a massacre inside. Feathers everywhere, and all 13 chicks gone. I walked around my property and found 3 other bodies. What could have done this?
really? What about horses? my pony love bananasDon't hold me to this, 'cause I'm not positive, but I believe I read on here that banana peels aren't good for chickens.
plug in the usb and camera, then go into you start menu, click on 'computer', then click on your 'F' drive, may say device with removable storageCan any of you suggest a software package I can use to upload pictures to the computer?
I don't know what I had before, but it worked. I plugged the USB cable into the phone & the computer, & window came up with action options, & I was good to go. That is, 'til Windows 10 updated itself w/o warning; now the upload doesn't respond at all![]()
good info
Whites does your cell ask you anything when you plug to usb on laptop ?
If Not hook up phone to laptop, go into your files in IE10 and look for your cell phone listed to the left as in the circle above, open it up and look for DCM or Picture file or images folder in your cell. open that and then drag images straight to your desktop or folder
Once upon a time...
Nightmares have been plaguing me for about a week. I'm a nervous wreck. Not to mention, very tired!
Duckling primarily poops in the potty. She also has apparently hit the Terrible Twos.
Her father didn't come to pick her up like he was supposed to, and she was heartbroken. So was I!![]()

A fly was in my coffee pot yesterday morning, and drank itself to death. I was glad that I saw it, and that Westley has a single serve side too.![]()
I went to TSC during their 15% off sale. The total sounded low, but I didn't hold up the line asking about it. I dismissed it as not knowing the price of the feed to begin with (I don't pay attention since I need it and will buy it anyway). I now have four free bags of feed.
Duckling has four Tetras. They made it through the night.![]()
My female Muscovy is missing.
SCORE!!! what is he trying to make up for lolI woke up to my husband making breakfast.
http://www.nutrenaworld.com/products/poultry/country-feeds-poultry/country-feeds-gamebird/index.jspWhat percentage protein does it have?
Yayy!!I'm here, sort of. Just trying to work a bit. My daughter has her first chicken 4h meeting tonight, so she's been bouncing off the walls with excitement.
Congrats!I went to the store. Today is my anniversary. I need to get all the chores done, clean up a little and put together a nice dinner.
I am surprised at how many places look at you blankly when you ask about an all flock. They have starter, grower, meat, and egg, but not all flock.
Less popular.
YAYYYY!!!Aretha Franklin (Muscovy) showed up!![]()

LOLWell I'm way behind with no chance of catching up, so congrats to those deserving them!

DD's black silkie is at day 20 of quarantine. Almost there!
Yes rocking is a good sign, but not all eggs rock, they could be talking to each otherHey all, Not sure whether this is the right place to ask or not, but I just had an Incubation/Hatching querie.
I'm on Day 21 of my first ever Batch of eggs in a Styrobator that I am borrowing, and I was wondering if it is normal to see a lot of rocking leading up to the hatch? I went into lockdown on day 18, and on day 19 they started to all rock a lot, it's funny because they were all set in a pattern and now they have all managed to move into nearly a straight line.
Anyways
I am just very anxious, as it is my first batch ever, and I don't know whether my humidity levels are good or not because I didn't know you needed a hygrometer (such a noob) All I know is that I need to make sure there is water in the two wells at the bottom of the bator, so I have a pipe that I put in before hand so that I can funnel water in, but I can't be certain. I really hope to hear some peeping and see some pipping soon, though I have heard that it's normal for them to hold on sometimes.
It has been a battle with this incubator to make sure it keeps a good temp. I have a fan but that broke down, so I've been keeping it at 102.5 or so since it's still air.
Thankfully lockdown temperatures have been stable, I put a blanket over it on one side and that's helped a lot.
Thank you so much to all who reply! Fingers crossed they all hatch. They are ISA Brown (F)/ Light Sussex (M)
