yes and the blood drains this is good but to put in the bag first would be much cleaner than blood flopping!
That's true. Do you want some 50lb Purina bags?
read post to banty, thank you though!
I wonder if simply using a trash bag and duct tape around the lower neck to hold it and a strip tight around middle would work for the broom method? as in keeping the flopping in the bag and the bird from getting bloody mess
Sounds like a lot of work. Usually I don't pull the head off so the head/neck is still under the broom and I'm holding the feet while it flops.
gotcha

Way you are doing from it a big issue?
You hold the bird with your left hand and with your right you slit the throat! No problem there! I could put some clip, but I understand it kind of problem .
lol we know how to kill them, its the flopping control of the jerking that is the bother
hahaSo is anyone going to remind a certain someone about candling and why it shouldn't be done every five minutes?

I think it's the wrong clip.
yes lolIs it bad that i'm too tired to take my new incubator out of the box, even though it's here and staring at me?
nope, if i switch screens it reloads and all is lostNo URL copy options?
Well... it's officialy, I have 2, beautiful developed silkie eggs out of the 8 (with 2 being infertile when I got them.) today, the blood ring in the 3rd was confirmed and the kids are going to perform an eggtopsy on it when dad has time to crack it open to see what day it died. I think around day 6-7, but we'll see. The silkie eggs that are remaining, are getting filled up and getting harder to see through, but the blood veins are obvious along with the development every few days, so i'm excited for lock down in a week.
ROFL!!! i love it!!!Not that it matters, but I gave up on teaching my great pyr's "to come" instead, their recall command is "hot dogs." works like a charm.
vodka is made from taters though??I have a bear of a time finding gluten free vodka for vanilla extract....
ask sally about gooserzI need you to convince me that geese are awesome, since my husband has given up on telling me "only chickens" now. I need to convince my 12 year old that geese are okay.
seems like the white ones have more trouble getting out that the other colors??More foot over head pictures (sized small, so shouldn't take too long to load:

to cute!!X2,i absolutely adore my turkeys! My first group i handled all the time but my second group not quite as much. Most of them are very affectionate. I have 2 hens that love to be held and cuddled (one comes in for a hug every time you squat down and open your arms). And two toms who want snuggled or held constantly lol. But almost all of them want attention all the time.
Cuddles on my lap
There tends to be lap jeolousy. Cuddles hiding her head from Eve
Romeo and Dinner taking over my lap. It's seriously hard to get pictures with two toms on you!
They love any attention they can get and the kids love giving it
Before they were too big to do it anymore, they preferred the shoulders
Eve, my origional lap turkey. She feels that I belong to her and will defend me if necessary lol

did you get it cleaned up now? update?I am new here and I don't know if I am posting in the right place. I have a question. I am hatching today and he one out. I have 2 incubators and was going to put chicks in one once they hatch so not to disturb the ones still inside shell. When putting a chick in the incubator I noticed a smell of pinesol. Not strong but I can smell it. Is this safe or should I put the chick back with the other eggs that are not hatched?
awesome! great picture! My eggs are developing..... can you all see it???
I am on instagram www.instagram.com/zades_australorps
lol, chickens are notoriously dumbOh ****. I woke up to it DOWN pouring this morning. I'm going to have to check on the baby chicks and maybe bring them back inside?
Hubby checked on them last night and had to rescue them at like 1am. The thunderstorm freaked them out and they were running around inside their pen panicking... he moved them back inside their shelter, to show them where to go... but he said "these are the dumbest group of chickens I've ever seen."
pretty eggs too!!First time for this batch 7 eggs from 7 pullets
who cares about coming back LOLDon't know about the time off factor. I do know at $5 a pack one pack a day could get me to Hawaii if I choose to go. Might not get me home but I could sure get thee.
let us know how they think you will infect a cadaver, i'm rather intriguedDay 19-1st BCM egg pipped. too bad I am gonna miss all the excitement as I play secretary. And tomorrow the students get to go to cadaver lab tomorrow and I cant go because my brace is "an infection control risk"...It's a cadaver lad-who am i going to infect!!!! I just like to watch and learn
Oh well-I will be reviewing policy and procedure and doing the teaching paperwork the actual preceptors should be completing![]()

Cute!! What breed??
cute!
what a great hiding spot for it LOLVery funny
Although.... In order to do the eggs, I have to figure out how to get my new incubator up and running. My hubby built it, tested it to make sure it turned on and then hid it in the back of my closet.
I have to find a place to put it. He said it was too big for our bathroom, that someone would break it on accident.
no, i have this oneichthamal?

are you trying to lower the humidity??Hubby said turkey/ducks fine. I got the incubator setup in my daughters room, I'm trying to figure out how to get the temp/right. I don't have ANYTHING in there for humidity, and it's reading around 60% I think I may use small egg cartons and keep the shipped eggs upright, and just turn by hand, then lay them down for lock down. Hopefully that helps their success rate on the next batch, providing I can get the humidity/temp right.
I've never worked with a hooverbator before, and it's a lot more complicating then just turning it on. LOL
Hubby approved the big metal tub for the turkeys, and I'll get another big brooder box for the ducks and he said I could buy some sex linked babies.... I really, really love my husband.
i was over 1000 behind too!!Morning all. I was so busy this weekend I didn't even have a chance to get on here. I'm 100 pages behind, not gonna try to catch up. Did I miss anything exciting?
Lots of pretty birdies WITH A ROOSTER!!!!
lol, so pretty!yes tolbunt polish one is frizzled yes, she is a freak, actually they all are fairly freakish
Yes so long as they are the LF not the bantams, they were bred to be dual purposeVery pretty yard art. I hear they are supposed to be dual purpose as well?
Love momsfunny thats what I had for lunch leftover bantam cornish pot pie, Mom made for me Sat, I was afraid the broth would go bad, I was pretty sick this weekend so she fed the gang several meals, Thank God for Mom, she came today did my laundry and dishes lol, I said she can come do work anytime she wishes
hilariousIt's lizard season. The cat is stalking one through the living room.
Great news!!Oh, one last post, I was able to go to the local feed store, that had been closed on sundays and they had a 30% protien poultry "chow" of some non descript brand i'd never heard of... but the contents looked right, and it was for poultry/turkeys.
AND it wasn't expired.
So, I'll use that until the turkeys are about 10 weeks and can eat an all flock feed.
not too many changesWell that took all morning off and on. Caught up from the weekend. Other than the addition of some new names based on the weekend chatter doesn't seem as though much has changed around these parts. Never know when you leave for a few months what you will find when you get back.
mail him, males are more snuggly tooMC
i have a very nice boy cat for you, very very nice. drive you insane want attention cat
woot, my 24+ silkie eggs are shipped. Should be here in a couple of days. hoping to put them in the incubator on friday. That should give them enough chance to settle air cells and I think I may leave them in the cartons to see if it improves hatch rates.
I love jack, on the rocksI love Jack!!! But straight up-no ice-no mix-just a shot now and then......
if her butt get dirty again soak her in an epsom salt bathThank you Sally, I just read through thatI don't think I have any probiotics but I could put ACV in their water if that is okay? Or only if they have a hen?![]()
It is the one that had that unabsorbed yolk. It still has a tiny little bubble on it from that so I'm hoping it falls off but I am making sure to put iodine. It's a happy chick and active so I think it will do well, it just seems to need help. Hopefully its bottom doesn't get messy again. I will raise my brooder element tomorrow because they are getting taller and I won't want it to burn them!
Hook, line and sinkerOkay cool, I'll do it when I do my daily water change for them in the morning, They kick so much crap into the water in such a short time!! Cute little scratching!
Not intensionally! If you put your hand in there they all come rushing out from under the brooder plate to either peck at my rings or jump into my hand and use it as a step to jump on top of the brooder plate!
Didn't really want them to be too tame because they're for eggs and meat, but it's nice that they don't seem to mind us big humans!![]()
Thank you! I've had chicks before but never from eggs to day olds! Been a great xp
Cannot wait to do it again![]()
6!! holy poop!! we can only get 2 around hereI love the intro. It got my attention and I was ready to soak up the knowledge.
Those seasons are comparable to what I was used to growing up. NC is a bit different. Also not used to initial limit of 6 deer with the possibility of buying 2 tags at a time after those 6 are taken. I aim to fill my freezer.
Mine is clean and mean. Plain jane wood stock and iron sigths. Love shooting it but its a pain to clean.
Morning CH, and those that popped in while I was away.
and ours have to be bucks, no does unless you get a special tag, and only for like 2 days![]()
Yea I aim to fill my freezer every year as well. I think most we can take is 6 doe and a buck.
I want one!!!Mornin beautiful!! how them lizards and ditch ducks?

right hereLIZ WHERE ARE YOU?
she knows her job, and if anything happens i am sure she will make PLENTY of noiseTurkey's and ducks should be shipped today. I'm pretty excited.... Our great Pyr loves being inside during the daytime to hang out, but man, she refuses to be inside at night, rain or shine, she has to be outside sitting by the other animals while they sleep. In some ways, I find that really comforting that she's out there, and then part of me worries something might happen to her while i'm sleeping.
Sigh!
my neighbor does this cross, and they come out sex linksI have a question,
I have one remaining Barred Rock Hen that lays the godzilla eggs, she is in with the BCM rooster as she is "Pepper" the last of the friendly kids chickens.
If I hatch chicks they will be black sex links? meaning the boys will have the head spots?
I totally forgot about that option when I got rid of the rest of the flock! They would be awesome layers and meat birds as both birds are huge as well as the hens eggs! also will that make the eggs darker? or spotted? I need to read I guess... dang headache!! I am thrilled this hen is still producing these huge eggs, or any eggs at all she is six years old. I almost cry when I crack those big eggs open and should this big egg laying ability carry through to some of the hens?
Hi!! I am herex10000000000000000000000000000000000000000hope she is ok chaos what you do to her!!!![]()

Yea she's fine. It was her weekend and now she HAS to read the 6 million posts she missed.
That's terrible. I feel bad for you![]()
I'm good. No plans really. Gotta finish up a project and if I have time clean out the duck coop.
purdysaxony
I do!!You don't want any of those curly sebastapol gooses?

ugh LIZ hurry up!!!!! read one skip fiver!!!
Im going to get some warsh done!
She won't skip cause she's weird.
Have fun doing the warsh.
Definitelyreminds me.... can these tapered foot things in this image be a DIY? suggestions I would love three of them!
its plated steel, should work very well, just use a torch to heat it as you bend, much easiernot sure what that says lol![]()
i'm shorterim a midget remember at 5 3 and besides its a story n half up
lol, and if you get males n females on the poults you can incubate next year and have moreSo out of the 10 turkey's I ordered, only 5 out of 17 eggs hatched.... and none of his duck eggs made it. One hatched, took a breathe, and then died on him before he could help it.
So, he's got some ducks hatching next week and he's going to try to send me the difference in turkey's, in ducks.
I suppose if all 5 turkey's survive their trip, 5 isn't a bad start. lol
@Sally Sunshine @DwayneNLiz
my daughter wanted to show you something "cool" she found.
With that said, I also made her cry, because her rooster saw her catch a bug, he waited patiently for her to give it to him and when she didn't, he finally kicked her boots to make her let go... which she didn't... so I forced her to feed her rooster the bug. Told her it wasn't nice to wave a bug above his head when he was expecting a treat.
She was... mad at me about forcing her to feed him the bug she caught... but I told her if you don't want him ****** off at you, you can't tease him with tempting morsels and not fork them over.
really?I'm jealous, I want one.![]()

Yes! great ideas!!Good morning one and all!![]()
Incubator upgrade time
My last few hatches have been extremely wet and icky, and upon looking at the shell leftovers I notice there is an off-colour spot where the egg was touching the ground, which looks like absorbed moisture. There has also been a high rate of slightly open navels, which was a sign of too high humidity if I recall right?
I've had water slosh from the bowls and drip from the papertowels on the sides to the floor, which then makes there be quite a bit of water that some eggs were sitting on- Of course, I had papertowel underneath the shelf liner, but that got waterlogged quickly.
I am wondering if this might be a part of my low lockdown-to-hatch rates, as I lose most of the embryos in that period of time.
This high loss at lockdown (up to 50%) has occurred with eggs from multiple sources- None of them shipped. I know that is "normal" for shipped.
So I've been thinking about an upgrade... A grated platform that would let spilled water fall to the bottom instead of becoming squishy, icky, and possibly harming the eggs to some extent.
I was also thinking about running tubing thru the sides to where I put the bowls of water, which would reduce the # of times I had to open the incubator, which in turn might help hatch rates.
I might be completely wrong; which wouldn't be unusual, but I thought I'd give it a try. It can't hurt and might help....
@Sally Sunshine
@DwayneNLiz I know you had a shelf in yours....
WOOHOOO!!!!Good morning all! 7 BCMs and 2 Serama eggs pipped!!!! Looks like a nice day here at work too. All the rest of the chicks and chickens and ducks are doing good. Hope everyone has a great day!!!
I've ordered from Ideal out of TX, in late Nov all made it alive, many extra packing peanuts tooI'm looking into ordering chicks online, I know some of you have done it already, what was your best site to check
thats great that she did that!! Great job Harmony Ann!!yes a tie down tightened between two trees
I used a shovel to kill one of them this time, to see if luke could do it himself. I ripped its head right off, ummm too hard of a pull but I never did it so I wanted to be quick and thorough, ummmmm I guess it was right? Luke couldnt do it, he too weak yet, Harmony said she didnt want to do it that way and did the knife to throat. she did good, but I worry about her cutting herself as its very easy if your not careful and your head is already filled with worry over doing it right the first time. so she wont be doing that again, but she did a complete chicken kill to pot all by herself, she wouldnt let anyone help skin or anything, she is typically not so strong willed so I was glad to see it come out for once.
i think a trash bag would be too flimsy, they would rip it to shredsI wonder if simply using a trash bag and duct tape around the lower neck to hold it and a strip tight around middle would work for the broom method? as in keeping the flopping in the bag and the bird from getting bloody mess
