Good morning one and all!

Incubator upgrade time

My last few hatches have been extremely wet and icky, and upon looking at the shell leftovers I notice there is an off-colour spot where the egg was touching the ground, which looks like absorbed moisture. There has also been a high rate of slightly open navels, which was a sign of too high humidity if I recall right?
I've had water slosh from the bowls and drip from the papertowels on the sides to the floor, which then makes there be quite a bit of water that some eggs were sitting on- Of course, I had papertowel underneath the shelf liner, but that got waterlogged quickly.
I am wondering if this might be a part of my low lockdown-to-hatch rates, as I lose most of the embryos in that period of time.
This high loss at lockdown (up to 50%) has occurred with eggs from multiple sources- None of them shipped. I know that is "normal" for shipped.

So I've been thinking about an upgrade... A grated platform that would let spilled water fall to the bottom instead of becoming squishy, icky, and possibly harming the eggs to some extent.

I was also thinking about running tubing thru the sides to where I put the bowls of water, which would reduce the # of times I had to open the incubator, which in turn might help hatch rates.

I might be completely wrong; which wouldn't be unusual, but I thought I'd give it a try. It can't hurt and might help....

@Sally Sunshine

@DwayneNLiz I know you had a shelf in yours....

I thought I would share this with you.

Check out items 10, 14 and 19. Those things seem to apply to your hatches.

Quote: Veteran drivers are some of the best drivers on the road. The ones that worry me are the younger ones. I got to talking to a trucker at a truck stop once. I told him we were headed to OK City and I couldn't make heads or tails of the way around St. Louis. He told me to follow him & he'd get us around. I could barely keep his tail lights in sight in my little Datsun sometimes, & had her wound up as tight as she'd go, but we made it to OK City in record time.

i turned the eggs in my new incubator this morning. it was running a little low, so I upped the temp. I'm going to have the hardest time keeping the temp stable in there, it seems so much more sensitive then my little one :(

I may add an additional bottle of water that's heated up, to see if that helps. I got the rocks in there, the humidity's good, (between 30-40%) and i'm keeping a close eye on it. But I worry what happens if it runs at 99.0 instead of 100... anything? or will it be okay if it's 99 at night and 100.5 during the daytime?

haha, that's awesome. I'm assuming this trip was before the days of GPS in cars?

It'll be fine if the thermo says 99 at night and 100.5 during the day. Most thermos are only calibrated to + or - 1 degree so your actual temperature could be just enough between those two numbers to make it keep switching.

Okay. I'll be keeping a close eye on it then.

My turkey's are here, post office just called. On my way to go get them!!! be back in like 30 minutes... I have to wake up the baby. LOL

After watching them on youtube, and hearing the noises they make, I'll stick with the sounds of birds I can handle.

I actually like hearing a rooster crow.

They're actually not bad. My neighbor and I love that they will make a racket when preds come around.

I thought I would share this with you.
