our land is already pretty wet and clay/mushy/nasty... So i was going to lay it down to create a barrier between the ground and the "new ground" which will be sand on pea gravel..... Will that work??? I wish I had something including weeds in there-the birds would be much more happy. Some are out in the downpour now chowing on grass, weeds and worms I'm sure! I hope they go in ok tonight-its their first time out of the coop and run....

Any advice is read and appreciated... and you will only have to tell me once

If you want to create an area, that has less mush, you could do what we did for our round pen, we put the non-degradable plastic tarps down, meant for gardens, layers of rocks, then pea gravel on top, to create a less muddy area. We had to dig down pretty far though and it took multiple trucks worth of the rocks and pea gravel, but it worked great. Even when the rest of the land around us is too muddy to ride, we can clean his feet and use our round pen.

I would imagine that could work for your chickens, for a small area for a coop.

edited to add : for free ranging, they should come back eventually. hopefully :p

Think my 1st hatch is done... Got 2 icelandics, 2 legbars (unfortunately both roos I think) 1 favorelles, 8 BCM & 11 Serama if you count the 2 that Puff hatched! Still have 15 BC, 5 mottled java/d'anvers/some other kind-not sure-1 or 2 of each, 6 Ayam Cemanis that are looking good and 7 or so seramas due anywhere between Monday and Thursday and another 12 of stans eggs that just went in a couple days ago.... ! didn't make it out of the shell & I didn't assist because I wanted to give the rest a better chance-I did save one-we will see how that one turns out. Put Stans baby and the one I helped under Puff with her 2 babies. So funny to have chicks in the house again!!!

That's about what I did except I used weed barrier instead of tarp and am going to put sand on top. I am also going to try to put some tarps over top the run at an angle until Bill slows down and can figure out a roof/runoff system. Those poor muddy birds!!! they look so nasty right now!!!

Ha!!! I'm from Sac!!!! See my location??! Born there ,raised there. Lived there 30 years. Actually was just home for a couple weeks visiting my fam. Say hey for me!!!!

Love that you're in my home town

Lots of us from the general area. Was just downtown Sac today. Work from Elk Grove to Marysville

I'm also part of the NorCal crew... Just south of Sac about 45-60min... Little River town, Rio Vista... Humphrey the whale came through here :)

Well hello to you! Yay NorCal!! I miss home. I'm familiar with Rio Vista. See my hub and I are retired truck drivers. We've literally been to every town in the lower 48. Pretty cool considering before I was 30 I'd not been out of California but a few times to Reno!! Then within a year,I had seen the lower 48 states! I'm blessed to have experienced such beautiful country. Montana is a fav of ours. Just beautiful there. We have a lifelong dream to go to Alaska. Would love to fully homestead but we were in a near fatal wreck 5 years ago. We were in our semi truck and were hit by another semi truck. At 80 mph. It was the freakiest experience ever. Now,we're both badly injured. My lower back is screwed for life. But! God is so good. We do not dwell on what we're no longer able to do but are grateful for what we can still do. In much pain...but nevertheless we are blessed!!! We homestead on our farm as much as we can. Would love to be more self sustainable in the future. All things are possible through Christ!

When #1 son started driving he was OTR for Schneider. One of his trips took him over Donner Pass (in CO?). He was stuck on top, in a blizzard, no usable chains, and a cop who wouldn't let him even move his rig w/o them. He sent pictures out the tractor window; looked like a moonscape, or Siberia. He was finally able to fashion a decent set of chains from the 4 busted sets they'd sent him out with, and made it to the bottom, where folks were mowing their lawns! He's no longer OTR; he drove for Tax Air for several years; now pulls a reefer to Chicago every night (sometimes twice) from Racine, WI, for UNFI Been on the road for almost 20 years now.

Wow! Yea once you're in CA and there's any snow on Donner Pass, you must chain up. My husband hated that part. I did the chaining! And I was good at it. Once I gathered all of the ones my hub threw across the snow in frustration! Lol I actually helped CRST chain. And these two guys were from Canada....go figure eh?!!

Do you have a picture?

I'm just trying to visualize it.
