If you want to create an area, that has less mush, you could do what we did for our round pen, we put the non-degradable plastic tarps down, meant for gardens, layers of rocks, then pea gravel on top, to create a less muddy area. We had to dig down pretty far though and it took multiple trucks worth of the rocks and pea gravel, but it worked great. Even when the rest of the land around us is too muddy to ride, we can clean his feet and use our round pen.our land is already pretty wet and clay/mushy/nasty... So i was going to lay it down to create a barrier between the ground and the "new ground" which will be sand on pea gravel..... Will that work??? I wish I had something including weeds in there-the birds would be much more happy. Some are out in the downpour now chowing on grass, weeds and worms I'm sure! I hope they go in ok tonight-its their first time out of the coop and run....Any advice is read and appreciated... and you will only have to tell me once![]()

I would imagine that could work for your chickens, for a small area for a coop.
edited to add : for free ranging, they should come back eventually. hopefully
