Incubation Effort #28 Hatched

Day #20 - 9:30 pm 1 Delaware out, 1 Delaware PIP, 2 Welsummer PIPS. This picture is not great going through plexiglass. The little one is not stuck in the corner. He comes out, walks around and then goes back into the corner.

Cynthia I can not wait. The anticipation. Patience, I have patience. I actually have a small order from Ideal coming tomorrow or Friday also. I told the Post Office to call when the chicks or your eggs arrive. They said sure thing.

Yeap - I have been following your posts also. Just got home, took some pictures and was able to really get on BYC. It is hard when I am at work. So much work to do.

Day 21 6:00 am - A Welsummer hatched over night. There are at least 3 more pips working on it.

Day 21 7:30 am - Another Welsummer hatching. OK so I got to watch the zip and the popping up and down of the egg as he was pushing out. First time to see it. That is awesome. Here is a pic of it popping open the top. Sorry for the blurriness, but the window is a little steamy.

My Brooder Set-Up - We have a bathroom in the basement that is seldom used. I have 2 large rubbermade totes in there that I use to brood for the first week or so. I like to keep an eye on them to make sure they are eatting well and have no leg problems.

Then they move to the barn into the brooder. It is 3 ft. X 5 ft. I use feed bags to lay over the top this time of year and have a clear shower curtain that hangs on the front. There are two heat lamps with 240 Watt bulbs in them. Once they have grown enough to not need heat, they move to a horse stall where they grow out and their final destination is set. Either the main Hen House, the Silkie Shalet, remain with the Barn flock or I sell them or the Freezer.

Nice brooder! Usually, we have our brooder, an old homemade rabbit cage, in the shower pan in the bsmt bathroom. This time, Tom retrofitted the extra dog kennel by wrapping the wire halfway up with heavy cardboard. Since I cant go down bsmt stairs, it's up on the diningroom table. The Firetower coop will have to be disinfected, then at about 2-3 weeks old, they will go out there, depending on weather conditions. We can have a freeze here till the end of April, but they'll be fully feathered before that. I have 19 eggs in the bator due to that fertility thing with the Orps. I just cracked a couple eggs from the younger girls since the butt-fluff trim and they appeared fertile. Skye's looked sort of in-between, so hard to say about hers.
