Incubation problem

I am new to raising chickens however I want to try to incubate some of my own as an experiment. Well I put the eggs in a still air incubator and the eggs were fertile and growing normal as they seemed. Well I thought everything was going good however when it became hatching time there were two eggs cracked and they werent breathing. So I waiting another day and as I took them out I noticed they were all cracked but they were all dead. Well I also had duck eggs in as we'll so I waited because it was quit time for them yet. I had one duck hatch and is doing well however the other duck eggs did the same almost as the chicken eggs. I have felt like giving up on trying to incubate my own however I would like to see if you knew anything that I could have done because I just don't understand how I messed up everything went ok until near hatching. So please help so I do understand I feel horrible because they were in the formation of hatching and never hatched all the way.
