Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

btw @Perris, how do your larger broodies fit in the Nestera nest boxes for weeks on end? Trudy is the smallest of the three, and she has wedged herself in catty-cornered, with her rump and tail stuck up in a corner and her head partway out of the box.

I’d be growling too, if I were confined to quarters that tight!

That sounds like Janeka, at the back end at least; when in full broody mode their heads are usually pulled back into the body while the torso flattens out, though not all my broodies have adopted pancake pose.

Are you going to let her sit, or break her?

I’ll think over it, especially because the wire crate (for the new girls, dammit!) won’t come until Wednesday. But I’ll probably break her, because (1) it’s pointless, and (2) it’s already a bit disruptive in the Nestera, even though it’s a large. (She snagged the favorite nest box, of course.🙄)

Also, she was panting (which is what made me think that she was having problems), and she doesn’t need to be in there 24/7 in this weather.

Edit to add: Ooo, sudden thought: I just received an order of three Theragel packs (flexible blue ice packs for battered bodies.) It’s meant to be!!

14/07.
Thankfully the Met Office was right. We got a little morning rain (we need lots) and a ten degree drop in temperature (lovely).
Mow wants out.

Something nice under this plant just below the surface.

What is the point!
C planted early. They went to the trouble of buying covers for what they planted. These covers aren't much good in my view but at least it's a step in the right direction. Then we didn't see C at the field doing anything to manage their plot for weeks and just about everything bolted.
It seems pick what one plants according to the weather and the rate of growth isn't something that some at the field have quite grasped.
What a waste.

A lot of these plants could have been saved with a bit of attention and regular watering.

Our garden has gone a bit to waste this year. With everything else going on, something had to give. The stuff we planted with the chickens and turkeys in mind, is doing good, but the normal veg that I intending on preserving is a lost cause. At least I will have good seeds for next year. We need to totally revamp, I want to use cattle panels to make arches as supports for stuff and make it easier to weed and work with. We do raised beds, because I can't stand kneeling down and getting covered in stinging fire ants.
