Incubators Anonymous

I really tried to stop hatching....I really did. I went MONTHS with no eggs. But Orrpeople sent me some eggs....I had a great hatch. I held off a bit by setting up an incubator at a school, once those hatched, I was hooked again....

What has been my downfall.....There is a Farm CoOp on facebook that I seem to have WAY too much luck. I won Blue Copper Marans, all 8 looked good at lockdown last night. Won at the same time a mixed dozen, 7 of those looked good at lockdown, 1 iffy. I also won 8 Gold laced Polish that arrived yesterday. The first thing I won was a Defender chicken coop. I also won 4 pints of fresh butter. All of those I bought chances and my number was chosen. There are 15 more that I lost. I've stopped buying chances (except on non egg related items). Only one I'm still waiting on is a Flow6 behive that I'm in. We're just waiting for all the chances to be sold.

BUT.....There was a free giveaway, just post a link to the CoOp page to your home page, or to a farm animal related group, for a free chance. So, I did. I didn't pay attention to what the prize was. Out of close to 1000 entries, I won. So, now I'll be getting 10+ day old rare breed chicks. They don't know yet what will hatch out of the 7 pens they are currently hatching from. They said they will let me know what they are sending once they are boxed up.

Here on BYC, I bid on some double laced Barnefelder eggs on the 24 hour auction page....

I am lost.....

I'd gladly take some of that luck! Everything I take a chance on, I lose lol

I will be setting more ducks and turkeys this weekend for a friend.... we have one turkey egg in the current run that still looked ok last night and is due tomorrow. I am very thrilled that my first ever duck run is going well. I started with 12 duck eggs and 2 had hatched this morn with the other 6 still talking in their shells when I left the house

I had a broody and that broody's best friend (who I thought was a fellow broody) on my last hatch. Turns out BF was just hanging out with the broody, since she tried to kill the chicks I gave them. She got booted, and broody mom is still doing good. The babies and mom just got moved into a bigger grow out pen last night. The Polish in that pen are being the putzes and picking on the babies. Mom is a bantam, so she isn't being as fierce as I'd like. The chicks are 17 weeks now. They weren't letting them into the coop as it was getting dark. I had to put them in, but when I checked on them last night, they were all cuddled up together. This morning they all seemed to be mellow. I moved them, because I had another broody hen that is going to get anything that hatches this week....

Update, the Polish, sebrights and silkie are all at one end of the run, the Mom and babies are all the way at the other end (in an addition we added to the run). They are keeping their distances. Last night the broody hen that was in the Polish pen, got moved to the hatching pen that the babies just got kicked out of. Well, she seems to have decided she didn't want to be broody anymore. So, I'm searching my silkie pen for the next possibility. There are usually 4 or 5 that are broody in that pen. They just have to sit for 4 or 5 days in the new location before they get rewarded with chicks....

I'm loving the turkey poults this year. I hatched these penciled beauties last weekend. They will not be sold lol.

They look even cuter now. I should get new pictures.

I was cleaning brooders and scraping poop boards and moving chickens all over the place today for hours (it was beautiful out). Every time I have a day like this, I wonder why I do it to myself. But I can't wait til this weekend's hatch! Tonight is lockdown :)
