I am collecting more eggs from my group. My rooster jack that was euthanized, the eggs should still be fertilized by him. So going to gather as many as I can and hatch out

What does everyone do with all the chicks you hatch out?

I will keep one of each of the best and sell the rest. But I don't know how to tell a hen from a roo so I'll wait til they lay I guess. But also I want the darkest egg from the maran? Also they have different combs at 6 weeks, does that have anything to do with gender?

I grow out and cull down to my breeding stock as I go. Some are just for sale like EE. I usually remove roos ASAP so that reduces the feed bill by half.

Yes combs usually means roos.....

I will be keeping the chicks from my first couple of successful hatches and after that I will be looking to start selling them.

You know you're a lost cause when you wake up from a dream of pipping, chirping chicks and run to your incubator to see if they started hatching yet. Double points if you wrench your back getting out of bed so quickly to check.

I wasn't dreaming about it, but i'm waking up during the night and jumping up to go to check if anything's happened yet - it hasn't ......
