Incubators Anonymous

Well the bators are still in the corner of the garage. Seven of my girls are in molt and not laying. Money still tight. It looks like I'm not going to hatch any thing out till spring.

I will be building more coops, grow out cages, brooders and a turkey pen in the mean time. Might also try doing quail. I'm going to read the posts and try to get my fix through "second hand hatch". I never thought I wouldn't have enough eggs, just can't believe it.

I am in the same boat can't hatch until closer to spring too cold to keep the chicks out in the brooder. My sister had one get away from the light and almost die today. I gave it sugar water and egg yolk mixed with water until it started doing a bit better now it's opening it's eyes and moving around some. I hope it makes it. Confirms my thoughts that even with heat lights it's too cold for the babies outside so I will try really hard to be good for their sake. We can be in withdrawal together

I love my quail! First of all, they are so itsy bitsie when they hatch! And they run around like crazy. Then they double in size every week! And by 6 weeks, they start laying eggs! They make a hooting noise, but much quieter than roosters. And they don't need as much space as chickens.

My Grandpa raised quail. Sold a bunch to same gaming place where people hunt. At one point he had over 500 birds.

ETA: He was a hatching addict. That's where I get it. I hear it runs in families.

that sneaky little &^%$#... here i thought only one of my dorking hens was laying, but the other hen had other ideas.

found a stash of 7 eggs (all dorking) at about the same spot that my broody girl decided to put hers.

Woot! I got two boxes of eggs in the mail today! Some got smushed, but I still have 24 to put in the incubator tonight! Cuckoo Marans,Wheaten Marans, Delawares, Sumatras, lavender Ameraucana bantams, BR cochin bantams. So now if they all hatch, I need 6 new coops:p

Now I've moved that last 8 out of the 2'x2' brooder into the grow out cage in the coop. The bators and the brooders are now empty.
