Incubators Anonymous

Ok I have to share... My little D'Uccle laid her first egg today! Pretty good size for a little bird. What should I do if anything if I want her to brood them? Just leave them alone? And my little Wheaten Am is laying pretty regular. 3 eggs in 4 days. I have to get them a roo.... such a waste.

I just set 9 Lav Am eggs (probably all splits by now) 2 Leghorn (slackers!) and 6 EE. Due for lockdown while I am at the Newnan show

ok, well, figued since it was slightly cracked, i'd cook it. figured it wouldn't hurt the quiche recipe, i mean how much can 1 quail egg compare to 6 chicken eggs, right?

NO chance that sucker would have hatched... with 2 HUGE yolks in it (well huge in a "jumbo shrimp" kinda way).
how often do you see a first egg being a double yolker? besides, i didn't see a bullseye.

YOU ARE BUSTED!!!!! the eggs next to the little itty bitty ones have BULLSEYES and you are not hatching them?!?!?!?! You are on the wrong thread

Is that what I am? lol... IT fits...I got my first incubator last may, hatched everything I had and could buy cheap, took a short break around November and got a good deal on some show quality eggs in December and have been at it again ever since. This year I hope to experiment with different style incubators. See what happens.

i won't repeat hubby's response... and i have no problems eating MUTT eggs. the dorkings all go in the 'bator, but so far the roo likes the bantams best. that's going to change soon as i retrofit my horse trailer from motorcycle garage to chicken coop. just waiting on the &^%$ to come get the bikes. they've been sold for 2 months. i'm going to start charging him room and board for them.

besides, i'm keeping space open, as I *MIGHT* be getting close to 4 doz dorking eggs soon.

shopping for another 'bator as I speak...

Well I'm getting ready for the first big hatch of the year. Got my bators, including the fans installed, brooders, grow out cages and all the waters , feeders ,etc. I need. And what do you know? One of my R.I.R. hens goes broody! I feel so..... defeated. One of my own girls beat me to the punch.Oh well, she can't hatch 82 eggs at a time. But still.

All I need now is for the girls to pick up the pace.

Too stinking funny!! I must admit that the first thing I looked for was the bullseye! JD4570: I read something on the NYD Hatch Thread about sprinkling your girls feed with cayenne and they'll 'pick up the pace' for you. I haven't tried it myself. Locked down last night, started with 30 eggies, am down to 3 B/B//S Orpingtons & 6 Bantam Mille Fleur Cochins. My son talked me into keeping 8 other eggs in -even though I'm quite sure they're not viable, but who knows...

You found the right place to hang out!! I'm planning my spring pens and I'm so proud of myself for not firing up the incubator yet. Have plans though!

I looked at the collection bowl of todays eggs. THe girls are kicking into gear for sure!! THe daily egg count has reached 12 !!! YEAH!!!! Yesterday , one was a very tiny 1" egg, so cute, but it counts!!! Someone is just starting to lay.

Finally caught the marans laying. She's been giving an egg a day, unless there is another hen helping. WHile she was in the nest box the other day, I ran to the house for leg bands and she was done and off the nest box by the time I raced back. Darn. Missed her. Got her today though. Disturbed her on the nest, pulling a leg out from under her, to put on a white leg band. White for winter, easy to remember.

I'll remember to do this next Dec-- mark the winter layers and be sure to hatch those eggs for more winter layers. THe girls who need very little or no light to lay for me. Great girls to have.
