Who is Matt John? Is he on here? I got some Good Shepard Barred Rocks from Matt1616 on here at The Newnan Show in Feb.

I have been feeling that way too. Now that I have a plan to move birds and consolidate pens so I can have grow out pens OUTSIDE I feel better. I also feel better when the guy comes to pic up all the little roos
clap.gif
that cuts my numbers in about 1/2 when that happens. With the roos guy, now when I think about hatching it still goes like this "2/3 will hatch, 1/2 of those will be roos and I can get rid of them.... let me put some more eggs in"
gig.gif
It really is great if you can find someone to take the roos while they are still chicks..... they will eat you out of house and home.
lol i would do that too, if i didn't WANT to grow out a few roosters to use for breeding down the road.

but i have 2 swaps a month nearby, so i take whatever i want to cull with me, and an old guy there will buy any/all roosters for $5 each. tho i got lucky on my sandhill chicks... of 36 chicks, i got 10 roos - 4 were "natural culls". aka 2 drowned in the kiddie pool and 2 got kicked by a horse. so of the 6, i'm waiting to see how they mature before culling them.

I started hatching for the first time in the fall, was not bad, but the chicks didn't make it outside till spring.

I don't really want to repeat that. If I can keep my fall hatches small and only select breeds I think I can handle it better now. The stack brooder will help and so will the big brooder boxes (3) then I can put them in other grow out pens in the shop. The ones I hatch in LATE June and August should make it outside.

I am going to make sure they do anyway. If we have as mild of a winter this year that we did last year I should be ok
i put all my chicks out as soon as they're fully feathered, with a heat emitter (no light, just heat) in the house. food and water go outside. i have yet to lose any doing it this way, and they get to free range that much faster too. actually the last bunch were about 3 weeks old when they went outside, and started ranging about a week later. now they're off the heat all together at about 5 weeks old, even with 50+ nights lately. my broody babies are only 3 weeks old, and rarely huddle with momma anymore, tho they do roost together.

For my fall hatching some of them are going in a brooder house that I have that is heated and insulated. It used to be my fishhouse but I gave up ice fishing when I started raising chickens. I don't miss I either! Chickens are the only hobby that I have had that pays for it self or that I com out ahead on. Even with buying a new incubator tons of feeders, waterers, lumber, wire, heat lamps, and of course feed I still have spent less than I used to when I went fishing every weekend, and chickens I get to enjoy every day!

I'm hijacking my Mothers BYC while her home Internet is down (She did ask for my help
hide.gif
) She needs lots of help with self control, (don't look at me) but since she's hatching, let's get something COOL! Actually, I have a 3 1/2 yr old who loves Nana's & Papa's chickens and I'd like him to have a Pet chicken, as in little, sweet and Cool looking of course, I like the Japs but mom isn't convinced they are in the "sweet" category. I know the silkies are sweet but the kiddo doesn't think they are real chickens so scratch that.
Anyway, tell Nana her grandson needs ________, you fill in the blank. I'm no chicken breed expert, that's why I have enlisted you! Now you get a chance to live vicariously through her and she has an excuse to do another hatch.
Thanks

I will not be hatching in the fall this year. 50 chicks in stacked dog crates all winter was horrible. Never again.

Matt John--Buckeye breeder, also have seen his name as a Junior's judge. Don't know if he is on here--maybe. Shady Lane Poultry is his farm name.

Here is a good article on banding if anyone has sooooo many birds you can't keep them straight!
