Karen... I was on my phone... that roo looks pretty good! That pullet shafting might be a problem... Not sure how you could breed that out. Maybe if the roo does not have that it will help. Keep an eye out for a pullet. She looks a lot like a GLW for sure. I know that the DARKER the red the better the shafting gets. DARK is best. Your probably know all that

Pretty sure the GLW and BLRW are using different genes.... just can't remember what. Sometime the PHENOTYPE is the same.

the difference between a black BLRW and a GLW is the BLRW has the mahogany gene to darken the red. and blue of course to give the bbs lacing. the mahogany is a dominant gene, but the gold can hide for generations and come back up now and then.

Karen ,I have been tosing around the idea of making sexlinks by using the GLW x SLW. I have held back because I read the GLW is a smaller bird and less productive egg wise. Maybe it depends on thei line.

So the BLRW bantam is even smaller so he's out of the question. Puts me back at a GLW. Workable as a cross for SLW?

theoretically, i guess. but wyandottes seem to be slow maturing, so i'm not sure it'd really be worth it in the long run?

as long as the hen is a silver laced and the cock a red (meaning homozygous non-silver, non-mahogany red), you would get sexable chicks right away. the hens would breed true for red but the roos would be heterozygous (gold), since the silver has a dilution effect to red pigmentation. it might be useful to do a cross like that now and then to see about increasing size of a line that tends to be smaller maybe? a gold cock from a gold/silver cross, bred to either silver or gold hen would produce both silver and gold pullets but more heterozygous gold cocks, with possibly pure silver or red cocks in the mix (depending on the color of the hen). that's all based on theory at least. it could be varied depending on if there are other genes involved such as melanizing, mahogany, etc. which may change the results slightly.

if you bred laced to laced, you maintain the good lacing. without it, you get who-knows-what.
