I only count the ones that actually make it into lockdown.

I only count the ones that actually make it into lockdown.

But not every egg that makes it to lockdown hatches...

Fertility is # set - clears / # set. Hatch rate is # hatched / # fertile. My question is do you count the all chicks that hatch or the chicks that hatch and live more than 24 hrs.

For example:

I set 10 eggs. 2 were clear. fertility is 8/10 = 80%. Of those 8, all hatched but I culled one deformed chick. so is hatch rate 7/8 or 8/8? I'm thinking I'm going to use 7/8 since I only got 7 viable chicks.

I understand your question. I count every chick that emerges alive. My point is that counting eggs making it to lockdown isn't representative of hatch rate since they haven't actually hatched yet, and not all of them do.

Sew, I like the idea of waiting 24 hrs for any I have to cull, but honestly, I would forget. So I mark it by how many hatched.
