Incubators Anonymous

So out of three viable eggs(test run of homemade bator) we had 2 healthy chicks hatch right on time. The third is now on day 23 and we did the float test and a quick candle. Passed the float test but there is an awful lot of clear at the bottom of the egg still. I am fairly sure it is a bad egg. I am happy with the 2 I got, a few tweaks and we will set a nice batch.

with that many eggs the mass of the water bottle will have little difference in the bators temp stability. its taking up valuable real estate. you could easily have 4 more eggs in there!!!

I still leave it in there to prevent the other things from sliding around when I tilt my bator (that's how I turn my eggs). It's more for if a breaker flips (which I had happen last time and thankfully I had two bottles in there that time...temp only got down to 97) and I didn't need anymore room :p

This guy had some clear in his egg all the way to day 21. I was worried about him. but he hatched on day 23 after the clear shrank down and things were fine.

floating already incubated eggs usually doesn't say much, and can be potentially harmful to the chick if there's even the smallest pip, as water can get in and drown it.

at day 23, if there's clear at the BOTTOM of the egg (small end) then yeah it quit somewhere along the way. if you candle the air cell, a hatching egg should show an irregular outline with the chicks shadow possibly moving, if he's trying to get out at all (at day 20+).
