ok, I just candled my eggs at day 15. Had to take some out from early death. (All the bad ones out of 40 all came from the same vendor!) Anyway, some of the eggs have unusual shape air sacs. What is going on? The are not regular....they have dips and valleys. Are they bad, too?
that's pretty normal for shipped eggs IMO... i wouldn't worry about it. they just separated from the shell wall slightly during shipping, but by the time hatching comes around they'll be fairly normal.

you were not the first comment :)
I just figured I would ask, I just started hatching eggs a few months ago and can not get enough. It is like Christmas morning every hatch day! I picked up 2nd gen Bev Davis maran eggs from a local breeder. I can not wait for them to hatch, 12 more days

Whoot! Lucky YOu!! THe shipped eggs need special handling, IF you collect fresh, apparently no special handling. GOOOD LUUUCKKKK!!
Yeah I have heard that. I am sure at some point I will attempt shipped eggs, just working things out for now. I am already wishing I had another bator...

Quote: I made my second one. Cost much less than the purchased one($50) because I saved up the parts I needed and purchased a few new parts. Less than $25 to make the second and BIGGER one. I like that I can do staggered hatches. SO I can set the eggs when I can get them and not wait for the first batch to finish which ties up some 23 days really.

everyone is scaring me with the talk of losing their maran eggs. I have a dozen in the bator now. Is there something special i should be doing?

Dry incubation works best so they don't drown. My problem is they are shrink wrapping. Trying to solve that problem.... not killing them really, but not good. It is always just the Marans eggs, well mostly the Marans eggs. When I get the humidity up to about 70% the temp wants to go up, that is not good.... not sure how to fix the temp rising. Suggestions are welcome.

Just wanted to say, I don't really do anything different with shipped eggs. My turner broke and I am turning them once a day and they are doing fine. I also don't do anything different with Marans eggs, they all do just fine with dry incubation. Some will tell you to sand the marans eggs, I just think that is not a good idea. That to me just pushed the bacteria into the egg.... broodies don't sand eggs, neither do I. I have very good hatches with my Marans.
