Incubators Anonymous

Hi All, I have just completed building my own incubator using an old refrigerator, today is hatching day and so far it looks pretty good, 36 have hatched so far out of 47 with a couple pipping at the moment. I have found that a humidity reading of between 70 and 75% works wonders when hatching ( I am in South Africa which is a lot hotter than USA, temps of 40 degrees celcius are common here), I think it might be because of the heat we experience here. I have never piped an egg and this is the first time I've heard of it. I breed Orpingtons.

Welcome!

Congrats on the hatch. Its hatch day for me too!

We need to hook you up with Sumi. She has recently returned to RSA after spending a bit of time in Ireland and is having a hard time finding decent chooks locally.

She is in the East Cape region

can you believe a chicken friend scored me a side by side wine fridge NON WORKING perfect for a bator/Hatcher..... I was afraid to tell hubby but had to fess up so he could help me move it......what does he do.....he wants to FIX IT!!!!!!!! aaaaaahhhhhh it was perfect size for winter hatching. it would easily hold 5-7 doz eggs each side......dang I knew I shouldn't tell him about it.

Well, if its broke and won't cool - I would say let him try and fix it. When he gives up then you can have him "fix it" for you. If its a leak in the freon (or whatever they use for cooling now-adays) he may find it costs more than its worth to fix it. Compressors aren't cheap either. Just keep an eye on what he wants to fix and keep telling him it would cost more to fix that one than buy a new one... You may get your bator/hatcher yet.

DMR , I use my Leahy as a Hatcher for summer and in the winter same temo for hatching NO water as a Dehydrator for fruits and veggies and the garlick oh man the garlic YES mushrooms in now and talk about amazing 8 trays and full. Why cant i fill it up with eggs ?

Look up on craigs list for Leahy incubator or old red wood then give him an option to buy you one for help you convert the side by side LOL that will fix him good

if it's low on coolant, it's fubar. they don't usually have a fitting to add more. most newer stuff uses r134 or something like that, not traditional Freon (r22). even if it does, the system would have to be evacuated fixed of leaks then filled to the correct pressure again.
