Incubators Anonymous

Well I cleaned out my incubator last month and used vinegar
as I was going to keep it in storage for the rest of the year and
after 15 years of use thought it was time to rest but as it went
in to a little more then 4 week's of being out of sight and all
nicely wrapped up in bed sheets out in the shed the grandkid's
came by and found 7 goose egg's in the yard and brought them
in the house and asked where is the incubator

So back to work with having geese in the incubator for 4 weeks

Ohhhh, great. I'm in big trouble then. Almost 8 years smoke free!

I bought my Brinsea to do two hatches. Now I am planning out # 3, 4, & 5. And by then it will be time for the next New Year's eve hatch. And then what happens when I have grandkids someday? And when I retire and have more time?

Today is day 10 of my first hatch. I removed 7 non fertile eggs out of 34, is this a good hatch rate so far? I also opened one ventilator plug as suggested in other posts. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to open both or not? Will I need to re adjust the temperature? So nervous and excited

Are they home grown or shipped? If shipped that is GREAT. If home grown it would be a high number for most of my pens BUT this time of year fertility can change with the wind......

I had 16 delivered and 4 of those were not fertile. 3 of my belgian bantams, which are new layers. What makes them not fertile. I have lots to learn... I never knew I would get into chickens but I am already hooked in my second year.

personally, I took the plugs out when I got the incubators and the've been lost for 3 years now... air is a good thing. eggs need to breathe.

as for hatch rates, I don't count clear eggs among the totals as I have no control over whether the roo is doing his job or not... (short of trying another roo). so for incubating, my hatch rates are calculated among how many hatched from how many eggs that started growing.

like this last shipment of eggs I got... 14 silver laced bantam cochins. of the 14 only 5 are growing. the rest were clear. (some didn't even have yolks!)

So you mean to tell me that even though I only hatched 2 out of 15 eggs sent, my hatch rate was still considered phenomenal for a first timer cause 12 were clear and one was a quitter....? lol

Woohoo! That means I don't really suck at hatching!

That makes a lot of sense. It was funny that of the eggs I had shipped they both sent 2 extras and they both had 2 non fertile eggs in them. I guess it's the average for those breeders. 6 out of 8 are growing... Although they both came from breeders in separate States. Fingers crossed they all hatch from here...
