Incubators Anonymous

yes, rhis little guy is not going to make it.. checked in on him and i think he is one that should just never have hatched.. I hate these moments but i guess it's just nature taking it's course..

otherwise having a fabulous morning, making carrot and papaya wine (first time i have tried to make up my own recipe) .. my daughter is making soap, and this afternoon... Tomato wine and bottling of peach wine!!!

Aww yes some were just not strong enough. I always will try for them you never know.

Sounds like you have a fun creative day! Carrot and papaya sounds delish.

I've been posting things on ebay to sell and make chicken money. Gotta go out now and get a different cage from the barn for these chicks... they stink! LOL I put in a plastic dog crate thinking they would be cold if I didn't. That heat lamp is great.. they can have a wire crate on the table and more air circulation! Its warmed up here to almost 40 what a godsend.

I've never had one fail without obvious damage to it... (broken or the ceramic pulls out of the screw base...) easy enough to see if it's working, put your hand near it. LOL you could also put one of those thermocubes in the brooder with a red light on it... then if the temps dip, the red light comes on. a good safety backup maybe. but I don't worry about it.

I am just now getting to sit down for the day. I had to do a final cleaning of the new CHICKIE room..... that required cleaning a path to and from the room to where the other stuff is going. Moved the double oven, stove top and fan out....after we cleaned a new home for them. I used the steamer to clean the floor. The boys (hubby and son) unloaded all the feed from Wednesday's trip. We then Moved the Hatcher into its new home. That was easy. Got it warmed up and then I moved all the eggs from the incubator into the hatcher to keep them warm while we moved the incubator. THAT WAS A JOB! We had to take the WHOLE thing apart. It was too big to fit through the door so we had no choice. Took longer than I thought to take it apart and assemble it. Then I had to make sure it was running ok too. I am pooped!

GOOD NEWS! The hatcher is holding temp just fine even without the weather stripping. I do still have to do that but not as worried about it now. I left it running just to see but it never moved off 100 but cycles pretty quick. I like what I see so far.
Now I have to take a bath and hope I can get up tomorrow for church with the time change....

Man I always feel bad when 1 bird hatches early. Just had a turkey hatch this morning and the rest prob wont hatch till tomorrow evening. Now it's gonna be all alone for a day and a half.

your not an addict - you are a psychotic addict - my fave kind

I fit right in! I feel that I'll be on my way to recovery soon having found such a strong support system in all of you. :D So I didn't get an incubator from TSC after but did order a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance from incubator warehouse. It's a good practice in patience surely, since it'll be DAYS before it gets shipped to me.

you can fill those days developing spreadsheets with hatch plans to keep the new yellow beast cranking

I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem! I have 4 laying hens and the orpington is constantly broody. My granddaughter came to live with me and asked if we could just let her hatch the eggs. Off I went in search of fertile eggs. Bought an incubator and ended up with 45 eggs! Those are set to hatch on the 23rd and I'm getting 20+ more in the mail tomorrow. Off to buy another incubator at lunch. Thinking of setting it up in my closet so my daughter won't see and lecture me! Also looking for call duck eggs to try after the first incubator is empty. Yep, definitely have a problem!
