We didn't get finished with even ONE new brooder.... I have chicks that need a home ASAP! We worked some today but maybe tomorrow we will finish one enough I can move some chicks into their new home. I will not have the waterer or feeder set up but I can use the good old reg ones for a few days. I am super excited these are looking GREAT and I keep having ideas to make it even better...... causes more delays but in the end will make for a better brooder. I took a few pics today.... I know it looks total unfinished but it will only lack doors side wall and lights when we finish the floors of each brooder.

This pic shows the oil pan we built the brooder around. It is about 25 inches wide and 47 inches long. We made a frame to hold the pan. You can see to the left there is an area that will be for the heat emitter and light. My son is going to work on making all this work on some kind of circuit board. Each section will have a thermostat to control the temp and one to control the lights maybe. Might be easier to put that on a reg timer. The water will be nipples on the outside right wall. Going to use chicken wire so they can get their head out to get the water.... this is a working idea and may evolve to something else. There will be 3 separate brooders all the same size. We are going to make 3 of these for 9 brooders. One is for LF chicks I am keeping. One will be for bantams or SPECIAL breeds I need to give special care to. The 3rd will be for my Roo guys birds and chicks that will be for sale. It is just going to be a little easier to keep everyone separate so I don't have to hunt for birds when I need to sell them.

This is a picture with the wire floor. I think I will make a FENCE to go in front of the doors to keep chicks from falling out when I have doors open. To the left I am going to put hardware cloth to keep the chicks out of the area of the heat emitter. Feeders will eventually be on the outside of the door to the right. I am going to use a gutter since it will hold more feed than a reg chick feeder. I would LOVE to be able to go away for a long weekend and not worry about feeding chicks.

If anyone has suggestions now would be the time......

looking good!!!! but i know how long it takes to build stuff... after the 6 coops i am exhausted.. I was thinking of using the horizontal nipples with a feeder pipe running along the outside of the brooder with the nipples pointing in through holes, and also going to 1/4" pex for the chick systems so they are easy to reconfigure when i need less (because i only have my back patio for chickdom... ) I am still wrestling with my rubbermaid brooders but this weeks hatch is just putting me over the edge and more coming on saturday. And STILL my scrounged dresser for a chick brooder sits there untouched... I have sorted them out (sort of). I counted the lav Orp shells and i should have 7 chicks, but there are 9 orp looking ones.. So I know that two of them are isabelles.. but i don't knonw which two.. The other isabel is obvious because of leg feathering. Then there are the Marans, there are many black marans in there.. 7 are from my black/blue and the rest are from your eggs... Soo... I banded the blues as mine and then banded everyone else as yours and i am hoping as they grow i will be able to see a distinct difference in type, I should be able to. fortunately i had no plans to sell these ones so i will see them grow. there are quite a few with no leg feathering.. not sure which flock those are from, i get some clean legs in mine. It's alot harder to tell when you are experimenting LOL!! then i have some blue wheaten ams from my flock mixed in with the SBELS... moved all the obvious sbels out and then banded the rest as my blue wheaten ams, i will be able to tell pretty soon who is an SBEL pretending to be e wheaten LOL!! there are still a few lurkers because i do get the occasional black SBEL but let's see :)...

Just found out my 2 year old granddaughter may be moving in with us soon while her mommy joins the Air Force. My poor incubators!!! Lol Guess she will just have to learn some chicken farming at a really young age!

@Runawaylobster Don't instal the nipples at an angle.... they will leak. You have to put them in straight. Hubby wants me to use pex too. The fittings are expensive but you can bent pex with a heat gun some too. I want to figure out a way to hatch the DRIPS from the chicks. 4inch PVC pipe cut in half would work just not sure about the water and the 4 inch pipe might get to be too much on the one edge.

I am going to work diligently today on the brooder and the New Hatcher too. Hubby is going to SHOVEL runs hehehehehehehe I got the easy job LOL.

When I was a kid all I could have for pets was chickens. It will be one of the best times of her childhood with chickens I think .

Congratulations on your granddaughter moving in and you teaching her about poultry farming and her mommy joining the Air Force, she is doing good as the Air Force will not take junk and offers a great education for their personal

She LOVES to watch the chickens! She points and constantly says "bok bok"
The entire time she's outside. We taught her to call them bok boks when se 1st started talking, guess it stuck! Lol

Thanks! I'm happy because I know it'll be best for everyone. I just really don't know how good I'll be at it full time. Lol I sure hope th AF straightens mommy's butt out!! They are actually my "step" daughter and granddaughter. But we don't use those words usually. She is only 18, so granddaughter was definately not planned, & mommy really struggles to even pretend to play the mommy role, she's still so young she's more concerned with partying. So, at least I know my little sweety will be safe and well cared for with us, & hopefully mommy will grow up quite a bit while she's away!! :)
