Incubators Anonymous

Guys, I know it's picky but,   you use a HYDROMETER to measure the specificc gravity of liquids, for things like salt content of salt water fishtank or amount of sugar remaining if you make your own wine.    Relative humidity is measured using a HYGROMETER   lol!!!

:)

Sorry, my auto correct didn't know what a hygrometer is, but it does now. Thanks!

Can anyone here help me with how I can clean my incubator before setting eggs tomorrow? It's a new incubator and all I've done is put water in it and turn it on (empty). But I'm thinking I should disinfect it or something? Vinegar and water? Bleach and water?

brand new? I wouldn't worry too much about it.

if you're worried just use plain soap and warm water. be careful what chemicals you use on styro, some will damage/dissolve the foam.

I just sanitized mine with vinegar and water, but that is what I use for everything in my house and I'm a newbie.

I too was worried about humidity and I have the styrofoam incubators and I bought fish tank tubing at Walmart and stuck it in through the crack. On one incubator there is a notch out the side that I let it rest in. in the other one there is a place between the to and bottom parts that it rests in.

I will say that after this first time doing that it made me feel better because I was scared to open out at all. The bottom of my incubators have channels in them and I need to make a horizontal hole to connect the channels so I only have to have one tube going in.

Question: is there a page that tells how to figure out why chickens died? I have 6 Maran eggs that didn't hatch (my only guess is that the first 2 in that thing Area hatched and rolled them all over). I will hatch in eh cartons next time. I opened a couple of them and there were perfectly formed chicks.

You need to do eggtopsies and look at the chicks too determined when they died. There are too many reasons to list.

Most common are temperature humidity hen nutrition and newbie incubator-ers "tweaking" the bator.

Other chicks paying football with the eggs does not kill them.

I'm sure that I did my fair share of tweaking. Mostly during lockdown. I guess you live and learn and try and not get too caught up in it. Sucks knowing I was the cause though.

I had a duckling hatch 6 hrs ago the liitle one I guess got ahead of itself ..the first one clearly early a little blood still has bottom half of egg on and yolksac..kind of weak but still hanging in there. Only one other has just started to pip so I think it has several hours to asorb its.yolk sac...should I do the duck in a cup or just leave it be and see what happens ?
