Oh :) oops... well you know i mostly think marans

My CCLs are laying and have been for a couple of months
now. Compared to the leghorns, orpingtons and marans i have been a bit disappointed in the number of eggs
but they are still getting up to speed. Also the eggs are pretty small. the orpingtons have surprised me wiht the number
of eggs they produce, almost one per day..
I believe I read a post (may have been Donna's) that the CCL eggs start smallish but get really nice sized when they get the rest of their growth in.

I don't think I'm too worried about my birds carrying whatever that is... they free range with the wild turkeys (when the turkeys are in town) and the turkey population is strong as ever (30+ last time I saw the whole flock).

but this particular broody didn't take the gobblers so they'll stay with the brooder babies and integrate into the flock that way instead.

speaking of broodies tho...

I put a bunch of babies outside last week, with a heat lamp if they got cool, but a few were getting cold anyways. so on a whim, I tossed my buff orp who's been broody forever in the pen with them.

now, understand, these babies ranged from 4 to 12 weeks old, bantam and LF both mixed together (bantam cochin, 1 blrw, 1 silkie and a bunch of various aged sfh) about 20 chicks all together.

this is what I got...

the older chicks hang out on the floor of the house, above the nest Buffy's in.

this is the layout of the pen they're in, just for comparison...

Ugh. I am going to get myself into trouble this summer. I just moved 61 chicks (CX) outside because they were stinking up the basement too much, have 6 chicks in the brooder, and 40 developing in the incubator, due to hatch in 9 days. I have NO WHERE TO PUT MORE CHICKS but for some reason I've been setting all of my silkie eggs aside when I collect eggs every day.

What is this sickness????

Oh, and one of my silkies is broody. MUST NOT BUY EGGS. DH will likely strangle me if I do. Must put eggs from incubator under silkie.

But there are still 5 more breeds at least that I *need* !!
